December 9, 2003 — Jerry Seinfeld has finally picked his big-screen project, five years after the end of TV's "Seinfeld" -- "Bee Movie", a CGI movie about bees for DreamWorks SKG.
Seinfeld's resistance to starring in comic film vehicles didn't deter Katzenberg.
"You can see by how well his series does in syndication that his comic voice is unique and timeless, and the idea of capturing that evergreen quality on film has been a dream for many of us who've pursued him over the years," Katzenberg said.
The courtship worked, slowly. By the time Seinfeld ran into Spielberg in the Hamptons last summer, the two started batting around animated movie ideas. Spielberg sparked to Seinfeld's idea to set a comedy in an anthropomorphized world of bees, a structured metropolis that resembles Manhattan. Katzenberg took over, and suddenly Seinfeld had an unorthodox but high-profile return vehicle.
"I have always been fascinated by bee society, the world's most harmoniously run organization, and now I finally am going to be in it," Seinfeld said in a statement. "The enthusiasm of Jeffrey and Steven for this idea is the main reason I decided to do it."
