The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check back on Monday for the final figures based on actual box office.

Despite worries of a workprint that leaked a month ago and generally weak reviews, 20th Century Fox's prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, brought in an estimated $87 million its opening weekend in over 4,000 theaters, averaging over $21 thousand per site. It is the third-largest opening for a May/summer kick-off blockbuster, surpassing the opening weekend gross of Bryan Singer's X2 six years back (at least based on estimates), but falling short of the openings for Spider-Man and last year's Iron Man.

The New Line romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, starring Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner and Michael Douglas, hoped to offer some counter-programming to the superhero prequel, but it only brought in an estimated $15.3 million in 3,175 theatres, settling for second place with slightly more than Sony's Made of Honor grossed opening against Iron Man the same weekend last year.

The Screen Gems thriller Obsessed, starring Idris Elba, Beyonci Knowles and Ali Larter, plunged 57% in its second weekend to third place with $12.2 million and a ten-day gross of $47 million (Not bad for a movie whose production budget was less than half that amount.)

Meanwhile, the New Line comedy 17 Again starring Zac Efron dropped to fourth place with $6.3 million and $48 million total.

DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens continues to do decently, as the highest-grossing film of the year so far moved past the other three new movies from last week to take 5th place with $5.8 million and a cumulative gross of $185 million.

DreamWorks' The Soloist, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx, held up the best from last week, dropping to sixth with $5.6 million, followed by Disneynature's Earth and Rogue Pictures' Fighting, both with $4.2 million.

Opening outside the Top 10, the independently-produced CG animated film Battle for Terra (Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions), brought in just over a million dollars in 1,162 theaters, averaging less than a thousand dollars per venue.

The Top 10 grossed roughly $148 million, which is down slightly from the summer-opening weekend last May, where Marvel Studios' Iron Man ruled over all with its $100 million opening weekend.

Dang! I wasn't expecting it to make much. You expect the leaked footage online weeks ago would hurt it, but apparently not.

I think if they hadn't tried so hard to introduce so many different characters it could have been a decent movie. This film could have done well without The Blob, gambit, cyclops, charlie from lost, and the whole introduction story for the adamantium. Its sad that Fox is going to do more to ruin this franchise after the take wolverine brought in this weekend.

Don't forget international box office too. From what I heard, it pulled in $73 millions in 101 overseas markets. Thus, it already made $160 millions worldwide. That $10 millions more than it cost to make the film.

I'll admit thats more than I expected it to make this weekend, but with Trek next week, Angels and Demon's the following week, and then Terminator/Night at the Museum 2 the week after that, it's going to take some mighty big drops before the month is out.

1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
2. Star Trek
3. District 9
4. Curious Case of Benjamin Button

And this is only what... 3 days?... yeah.. it'll make more without a doubt.

Hey- if you really want to gripe about something... how about that movie theater popcorn and the butter-like flavored 10w-40 that we pay unbelievable prices for... tell me they can't improve on THAT....

Yeah but i don't think A&D or Night at the Museum 2 will make more than Wolvie in the long Run. But then again that stupid Mall Cop was #1 for a while and now MVA is. And i certainly didn't think either would do that good.
Anyhow i'm beting that TF2, Trek, and TS will rule the top 3 this year. Not speficly in that order and Wolvrine atleast somwhere in th top 10 domesticly.

Yeah, it had a pretty bad case of X3 syndrome. It exhibits all of the symptoms:

- Rushed storyline
- pointless cameos( some of which aren't the character AT ALL, I'm looking at you "The Deadpool" )
- Short running time in order to fit as many showtimes in one night
- a PG-13 rating for a character who has knives coming out of his hands( I don't get that, they did it with Alien vs Predator too. Two R rated franchises combine to make a PG-13 that is nearly half the length of any of the separate movies?? Hows the math work on that? )

Granted the X3 infection wasn't full blown( the cameos weren't so severe and abundant in this movie ). How do you go from X2 to infecting everything you touch with the X3 virus anyway?

Oh snap!! This thread just got served

The best thing about Wolverine?

THAT FRIGGIN' TRANSFORMERS TRAILER ON THE BIG SCREEN, THAT'S WHAT!

Worth the price of my 9.75 admission alone. I cannot WAIT for Transformers. That's my movie man.

I am glad its not a flop because all comic book movies need to do well because once they don't they will go down like the Cow Boys and Indian films did where no one really cares about them anymore.

Can they not just make a wolverine film without these past revelations and just make it a solo film, forget the orgins now and just do solo movies.

I think I am going to see it on Wednesday with my brother. Me and my mum took the foster kids to the cinema today and were inflicted with the Hannah Montana Movie (watchable, but there were MANY other movies I'd rather have seen). I've heard very mixed opinions of Wolverine, so I'll just see it and make my own judgement.

I will not pay to see this movie, but probably would go if a friend offered to take me.

What theater you go to? I never been to one wear it tasted that bad.

Went to a big chain- Lowes

Eh... you know if you sell ONE major product ya think you could make it better than you can make at home.... ya know??? I don't think theaters even pop their own anymore... I guess I'm just stuck in the good old days.... I'll tell you there is a guy that is usually at town functions ( picnics, 4th of July celebrations etc ) and he has a kettle corn booth... he has a big old "cauldron" that is propane fired and he stands over it with a huge wooden paddle and stirs the popcorn as it pops and adds seasoning at just the right moment..... I'd stand in line for that stuff ( and usually DO ) - it's 1000% better than the theater popcorn and not as expensive.

basically in Canada Scotia Bank and Cineplex got together and came up with these bonus points you can collect from going to the movies (the card also gets you a 10% discount off concession items) and if you have a Scotia Bank account you can get the Scene Scotia Bank card and Visa, so you can now also gain extra points doing your shopping

it rocks!

Well i'm pretty sure the quin theaters in Sylva pop their own. And the tickets there are like 4 buck or less. And i say evrey other theater i been to i can see em poping it right behind the counter even the Amstar in Moorsville and the Marque in Statville. Haven't ate the popcorn at the Phoenix in Cherokee yet and the old Carmike that used to be in Statesville had good popcorn to just the place smelled funny and they started puttin tv commercials on their movies instead of preveiws. Wich all in all putting commercials on it anit to bad sept theyd play the same one like 5 times before moving on.
