Anticipation Level:
How excited (or not) I am to see this movie...
I was so anxious to see this film and very afraid that it wouldn't open here. There had been a lot of talk about it and the general belief was that it wouldnt open here. I live in Sheridan, Wyoming. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it opened with no problems or controversy. There was an attempt by the local paper to stir a little sh*t, to no avail; but that was more because the paper was desperate for some news. The Thursday afternoon that I attended, it had already played for a week and there was a good crowd with MEN that were obviously not gay. I loved this film! Just let me say here that everything that driroak said, I echo. Anywhere in the U.S. in the early 60s was not easy to be gay, of color, or anything that wasnt WASP for that matter. I am one (a wasp that is). Now, magnify that in Wyoming. Obviously KM is very young. He doesnt know or cant remember what others have gone through so that he can feel so free to love. It is wonderful that he has never felt the threats and discrimination that are out there; so a word of warning, be careful the world can be a dangerous place. Let me remind KM of the Laramie incident, and that WASNT in 1960. Mathew Shepard died in 1998 after being beaten, strung up on a fence and left to die out in the middle of the Wyoming hills. You know that beautiful vast open space you saw in the film? Its not so great after youve been dumped out there, alone in the night.
All of this said, I was impressed with the authors insight, the films translation of the book. I think that littledarlin said it the best. Id just like to refer everyone back to her review. It is the best review Ive read so far. I can honestly say that this film haunts me. It was the first thing I thought of the following morning when I woke up, and I immediately began to weep. Its beautiful, tender, loving and insightful.
