| How excited (or not) I am to see this movie... |
|
| For me, Brokeback Mountain is unbearably haunting and heartbreaking. I have seen it three times now, and feel like if I saw it 25 times it would not be enough. When I saw it the first time, for some reason it really didn't register with me. It was like a time-released depth charge that didn't start going off in me until the next day. When I went back to see it again, I have never been hit so hard by a film -- and I have seen many a film. Ennis and Jack and the movie's ethereal score are like a magic silver fish hook that keeps diggin its way deeper and deeper down into me. What Ennis and Jack "stumbled upon" was the mother lode. I wept and wept and wept, seeing Jack and Ennis "when that thing grabs hold" of them and does not let go. I am left with the ache of Ennis at that lonesome trailer window without Jack, those harsh artifacts of Jack and Ennis' shirts together on a hanger. And an old postcard full of hope. It's just unbearable, and yet I can't let go. I want to go back and see the film again and again. Each detail and moment in the movie -- from the guitar notes to Ennis putting his arm around Jake, humming behind his ear until Jake dreamily closes his eyes -- makes it seem as if you are the Gulliver giant, and each word, each note, each downward glance, are liverpudlian hooks cast to reel you in. That's how the movie is so powerful. |
