I always thought Ennis said "Jack Im sorry" but hear/seeing the film again & agin I now know that it was indeed "I swear" God cried bucket loads. Also in the film did anyone notice that when Ennis rings Jacks wife up to "find " out what happened his wife seemed to read from an "autocue" the reason why J died as tho she had known/found out J was gay but to hide the shame of it she had to put out a perfected "Script" I wonder if the "flashback" shown was how J really died at the hands of Gaybashers or was it just Ennis thinking thats what may have happened? Good points raised by all here. Ken carps1000

Hi Caps1000! I saw the movie first time and was devastated for 3 days, I read the story and got a better perspective, in Annie Proulx's short story, she doesn't say Jack was killed in the bashing, only that it was Ennis' mind, going where he thought this life could only go - murder and destruction. I saw the movie a second time, and then felt it didn't really happen; there was probably an accident, but I think everyone feels differently. It may not have actually happened here, but as we know, it can and has happened to other gay men, or even just effeminent men. There is so much hatred. I hope some lives and views are changed by this movie, by Ennis' character, and his pain and anguish, somehow, someway I wanna see it again, and again...[SPOILER] short story [/SPOILER][SPOILER] [/spoiler][spoiler] [/SPOILER]

Hi 2 U Alma Jnr. After a week im Still devastated. I have seen the book & cannot believe that its such a short story. Its calmed me down reading it....but only just a little....Alma Jnr do you everytime you see the film again pray that there is a different ending??? I am a very stupid Carps1000. I hate cowboy films..Bored with love stories...so why has this affected me so much..??? Perhaps we all have a little BM in us. Actually, i think when ennis say "i swear" at the end because when the time he spoke to jack's wife, he tot jack is murder by the people who know their secret, even jack's wife told him it was an accident. So ennis feel kinda scared and worry. Afterward, he also went see jack's parent, and jack's father told him jack have suggestion bring other person(not him) to runing the ranch. Ennis again feel so sad and blue, feel like jack has abondon him or something.

however when he went up stair and found out the shirt. He realise all the though in his mind is so paranoid and unnecessary. Because it prove that how much jack want to be together with him.

Consequently, ennis say "i swear" at the end meant that he will use the rest of his life to love jack like jack love him.(that is why ennis change his shirt to cover jack's shirt at the end. to show he will love him. )

that is really what i think "I swear" meant

I cant think of a single gay man Ive known fitting this description.

Does anyone out there know a man who is gay and has had sex with only ONE man? While this anomoly may exist, any instance of it would be extremely unusual.

This story feeds fantasies but has little to do with the reality of the vast majority of gay men.

Before watching the movie, I have already read the story (and cry my eyes out at the ending). Even though I know what is going to happen at the end, I still cry my eyes out. I have been given a lot of thought on the "Jack, I swear..." phrase by Ennis.
From the very beginning of the film, Jack is the one that actually show some emotion and actually show that he love Ennis. Ennis does not show that he cares, even though he does. The most obvious of this is how sad and angry he felt when he know that Jack went to Mexico.
The "Jack, I swear..." could mean: "Jack, I swear that you and I will be together from now on"
Jack has always been the one loving Ennis (even though ennis loves Jack, he just does not show it). And so when Ennis switch the position of the two shirts, it show that the love is reciprocal.

Im a gay Man and have been with my partner for seventeen years. Yes we both had partners before our relationship but have been with no other person since we got together, we are committed to each other and always have been. Weve been together longer than all our straight friends marriages and yes some of or gay friends relationships have not lasted as long. To assume that all gay me have fleeting relationships does a dis-service to all gay men and perpetuates a negative stereotype. Not all gay men are the same. Just like any group of people there are differences. Its not that uncommon.

Were you really watching the movie? Jack went to Mexico sometimes when Ennis didn't have time for him to buy sex. His dad at the end also revealed that he was about ready to live with another man (probably that other married man who came onto him, I forget his name).

So while Ennis has only had sex with one man, Jack certainly hasn't.

LOL. Eventhough im prob. never going to watch that stupid movie, im faithful to women, i find it funny that this movie "changed" alot of people in many ways. K first off i have nothing against gay people, i just dont talk to them, dont really like them, and so on, they can do whatever they want. One thing is that my girlfriend's class did a read through that story and she watched the movie, and she said that one of the characters did have sex with OTHER men and then other guy got mad and they got into a fight, so isnt that true?

i dont know i have not seen the movie i never plan to,the only thing ive watched close to something like this was girl girl action,im done i am not returning to the board

a few of you mentioned how enis never showed any emotion towards jack. what about when they got done working at brokeback and when they parted. wasnt ennis hurled over and crying?
