I agree... Permian band should've been in the movie, I think it's all kinda weird! Why wasn't it filmed in Odessa? I've read the book twice and was so excited about the movie, but now they seem like they are just going to Hollwood-ize it! They should've kept it real like "Go Tigers"

I really am happy for you that your band got to be in the movie, but there are hundreds of proud PHS band alumni who worked their butts off to make it one of the best h.s. bands in the country for 40+ years now, who are not so thrilled. Not mad at you, just thinking I must be in some kind of alternate universe if they didn't use the actual PHS band.

I agree with you on the Permian band
I was in band in High school and no one knows tht band members usually with before school practice, band class and after school practice and weekends that band members put in more practice than the football team ad get no rewards for it except to be invited to big events like Parades and contests so this was a slap in the face

You have said you read the book, so you obviously know that my town (I live in Odessa) is a town that is biased towards football and Mojo. But here's a couple of things you might not know if you haven't seen the movie...

First of all, about 75% of the movie was shot in Odessa at the real Ratliff Stadium. The stadium in Abilene I believe is also the same. The only difference is that some of the crowd shots came from the 2003 final home game. All Odessa city shots came from Odessa. Extras were cast for about 2 months. It was a very big deal in my city.
1. There are TWO high schools in Odessa, even though the movie doesnt include my school. Odessa High School was the ORIGINAL high school in Odessa.

2. The Odessa High School Bronchos defeated the Permian High School Panthers this year. Ironically enough, it was the first year for the Panthers to lose every single district game. They were 6th out of 6 this year and finished with a district record of (0-5). The Saying at Odessa High is Friday Night Lights Out.

3. The real Midland Lee Rebel band was part of the movie, mainly because the book had nothing to do with them... However, the Permian kids did not seem interested in the movie, so the Permian director even asked kids from his rival school's band to join and wear permian uniforms for the shooting. Permian band did not have enough kids who cared about the movie production. This is also why they did not attend filiming in the Astrodome.

4. There is an interesting blooper in the movie that is very noticeable. The Odessa High School and Permian High School band both attended the 2004 Tournament of Roses parade. If you look closely enough during shots of the band, you can see a drum head with a giant rose on it commemorating the parade.

For those of us at Odessa High School, we like to refer to the movie as Friday Night Lights OUT
For those of us at Odessa High School, we like to refer to the movie as Friday Night Lights OUT
It's just too bad that there are so many anti-mojo fans out there. There were enough permian band members who cared enough to be there. I don't know why the movie people do what they do. I have lived in Odessa all my life and have dealt with the poor sports who hate permian just because they can. They talk about you and say things before they get their facts straight. This just proved how ignorant you are. I have a child at permian now and one who wants to go to OHS. That is their choice and that's great. There are those "poor sports" at permian. Like those stupid fools who wrote all over OHS and then did it to their own school so the blame would be a "rival" thing. Most students at both schools have pride in where they go and they work very hard in whatever activity they are in. I do agree that OHS should have been in the movie, or at least mentioned. The permian fans have no control over who makes the movie and what they put in it. Poor sports are everywhere. Leaving Ratliff stadium last year was unbelievable. There were OHS fans (they handful of idiots) standing along the route to get out of the stadium yelling curse words and throwing ice and cups at cars. Yes, mine was hit. I was glad to see that OHS won because they played a better game. It was so close. They won by one point. But I don't recall seeing this type of rude behavior at permian football games by our fans. It probably does happen every once in a while. I can't say that, but my point is don't assume you know or think we don't care or don't work hard for what we get. Permian band works just as hard as the OHS band. You think that just because we are Permian we're given titles and honors. Not true. We earn every single thing by hard work, team work, and our leadership. I say "we" because I am an alumni of PHS. And I know how hard it is to prove yourself over and over. You can't listen to the anti-fans because their jeolous and don't get it. Just continue to strive in excellence and keep your head up, especially when they all want to see you fall. ~PEACE~
