angfento said: I agree... Permian band should've been in the movie, I think it's all kinda weird! Why wasn't it filmed in Odessa? I've read the book twice and was so excited about the movie, but now they seem like they are just going to Hollwood-ize it! They should've kept it real like "Go Tigers"
You have said you read the book, so you obviously know that my town (I live in Odessa) is a town that is biased towards football and Mojo. But here's a couple of things you might not know if you haven't seen the movie...
First of all, about 75% of the movie was shot in Odessa at the real Ratliff Stadium. The stadium in Abilene I believe is also the same. The only difference is that some of the crowd shots came from the 2003 final home game. All Odessa city shots came from Odessa. Extras were cast for about 2 months. It was a very big deal in my city.
1. There are TWO high schools in Odessa, even though the movie doesnt include my school. Odessa High School was the ORIGINAL high school in Odessa.
2. The Odessa High School Bronchos defeated the Permian High School Panthers this year. Ironically enough, it was the first year for the Panthers to lose every single district game. They were 6th out of 6 this year and finished with a district record of (0-5). The Saying at Odessa High is Friday Night Lights Out.
3. The real Midland Lee Rebel band was part of the movie, mainly because the book had nothing to do with them... However, the Permian kids did not seem interested in the movie, so the Permian director even asked kids from his rival school's band to join and wear permian uniforms for the shooting. Permian band did not have enough kids who cared about the movie production. This is also why they did not attend filiming in the Astrodome.
4. There is an interesting blooper in the movie that is very noticeable. The Odessa High School and Permian High School band both attended the 2004 Tournament of Roses parade. If you look closely enough during shots of the band, you can see a drum head with a giant rose on it commemorating the parade.
For those of us at Odessa High School, we like to refer to the movie as Friday Night Lights OUT |
