I been a 80's slasher film fan ever since middleschool so,when I saw FVJ it was a real blast. But then when I heard of news of a sequel I was so pumped up! I constantly scoured the net each week for any possible news...rumour,tidbit,ment ion of the sequel.First their was the Freddy VS Jason 2 starring Bruce Campbell's character,Ash.I read the script of what was planned out and what a movie it could have been.It had lots of action and plenty of nods to great moments in horror but sadly,Spiderman sequel maker director Sam Raimi was too high on his pedestal to come back down for Evil Dead. So,the film was dropped from lack of trust and enthusiasm.
So it layed in the dark for years.People like Robert Englund and other directors tryed to jumpstart it,keep the ball rolling and give the fans hope.Something, anything!
The fans wanted a third icon in the sequel since,Freddy and Jason had done all they could in the first crossover and they needed new inspiration to wet their blades.A popular choice was Michael Myers. He has been in limbo ever since Halloween Ressurection but,all chances of this match up were shattered as Rob Zombie took the film and remade it into his classic trailer park horror style film killing the original Michael and his previous history for good for a quick buck.
So,with Michael Myers gone and the fans number one choice their is really only two choices left.Leatherface, the most realistic since New Line owns him but,his character is supposed to be a regular human that is loosely based off Ed Gein,so a movie of him fighting two characters you would never believe would exist in real life would clash and ruin any scariness.Plus,to have a third icon fight two immortals he would have to have the ability to take some hits and get back up which he,does not have.
Some say a Freddy VS Jason VS Chucky would be cool but truth is,Chucky was never an option since the idea of a tiny doll standing a chance against two large men who have gone through worse than him is nothing but a mere joke.A joke people often take too seriously at times and think it would be a good idea.
That left only Pinhead from Hellraiser.Back in 2004 a movie was being planned called Helloween.A crossover of Michael Myers battling Pinhead.Their destinies intertwined, telling the story of Michaels evil is the form of a powerful cenobite that has been living inside the person and has escaped Pinheads judgment. But,the fans shot this idea down and this quietly disappeared.
But did Pinhead still have a shot at Freddy VS Jason? Sadly,no.His character had become so vague and fallen so far from his respectable status that his films were little more than an afterthought sitting in the Straight-to-DVD rack at the back of the video stores.Clearly,Pinhead was dead to the world.People have forgotten him, thus if he was brought into play people wouldnt know who he was and it wouldnt be a huge hit.
But,their are plans to bring him back into the world for a remake but again, this follows the same route the Halloween remake did.It dumps the old characters roots and history for a retelling to a newer audience who isnt familiar, therefore a VS could never happen since he is either too old,or too new.Whichever way you see it.
Freddy and Jason are left on their own.The only way they could survive is if they parted ways for now and went back to their movies and left the VS for later years but, unfortunately that will not happen, now that both of them are going to be remade by the time 2010 rolls around.
All the respected horror icons are now dead. The lesser horror icons like Chucky from Childs Play are slowly following the same root.Chucky is up for a remake but,in an act of saving grace of classic horror,Phantasm - the underdog of all the great horror franchises is finally moving forward, producing their final outing after a 10 year hiatus.
Enjoy Alien and Predator crossovers while they last because one day, they will inevitably follow down the same road.
The horror icons of yesterday are dead, and this time nothing can bring them back.
