SciFi Wire recently interviewed Len Wiseman, in which he talked about characters in Underworld: Evolution. Here's a clip of the interview:

Len Wiseman, who directed the upcoming sequel film Underworld: Evolution, told SCI FI Wire that he wanted to explore the characters' pasts as well as their present. "Whether the characters have died in the first film or not, there's a lot of stuff that's still being discovered and uncovered about them that's in this film that we always knew we were going to do in the first one," Wiseman said in an interview on the set in Vancouver, B.C., last January. "And there's aspects of this one that carry over."

"I didn't want to do the same film over again," Wiseman said. "There's genetic memories in this film that will have the look of the ones in the first film. And then there's other flashbacks, when we go into the medieval era and all that. There's a whole different design for that as well."
