August 15, 2006 — Hy Hollinger reports "Without blockbuster-caliber films entering the international marketplace as the summer season wanes, indications are that "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," the overseas leader for six weeks in a row, will remain top dog for the rest of August and possibly into early September. As the Walt Disney Co.-Jerry Bruckheimer film picked up $43.8 million from 8,600 screens in 47 territories at its sixth overseas session, its overwhelming appeal was demonstrated again by its powerful opening in Spain, where "Dead Man's Chest" collected $11.3 million from 950 screens, a weekend market share of 75%. It was hailed by distributor Buena Vista International as the biggest opening ever in the market. The Spanish bow, aided by the record number of screens assembled by BVI, augurs well for bows still to come in Italy and Greece. The Johnny Depp starrer hit an international cume of $463 million at its sixth weekend, becoming Disney's second-highest-grossing film overseas as it passed "The Lion King's" $455 million and is setting its sights on the company's top scorer, "Finding Nemo's" $527 million.
