Universal Pictures has scheduled a May 14, 2010 release for director Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett.

The other releases scheduled for May of 2010 so far are Iron Man 2 (May 7), Shrek Goes Fourth (May 21) and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (May 2 - so there's no direct competition for these four films yet.

Crowe plays Robin of Loxley in an origin story of Robin Hood that hews close to historical facts of the period. Abandoned as a child, he finds community with the common people of Nottingham. Robin's abandonment and trust issues hamper his ability to fall in love. He meets his match in Marian (Blanchett), a strong, independent woman.

I've never thought of Robin Hood as a "summer movie" and aren't particularly convinced it can hold out too well. I think Iron Man 2 is still likely to be doing pretty big business in it's second week and likely still outgross Hood, then Shrek and Prince of Persia will follow and eat away at what gross it manages.

Maybe it's my bias and lack of enthusiasm for Robin Hood and/or Russell Crowe, but I'd have expected in sometime around Easter or in October.

The idea of Robin Hood being the villain and the Sherrif being the Hero was wwwaaayyyy better.

I no longer have any interest for this film.

Isn't this like the 5th Robin Hood ever made? We'll see how this turns out.
