Jackie Chan knows that a man who can catch a paycheck with chopsticks can accomplish anything... or at least the repackaging of your memories for financial gain.

The legendary martial actor will be mentoring a new childlike companion (no, not Chris Tucker), playing the wise Mr. Miyagi in a remake of THE KARATE KID. His student this time will be Will Smith's precocious offspring Jaden Smith. The movie will, of course, "examine the relationship between an older martial-arts expert and a young boy who is picked on by bullies".

The crane-kicking and leg-sweeping will be directed this time by Harald Zwart (THE PINK PANTHER 2, AGENT CODY BANKS), and will presumably not feature any appearances by Ralph Macchio, Elisabeth Shue, Martin Kove, William Zabka, or the vengeful spirit of Pat Morita. But it should.

Hmm... Seems to me the original actor hasn't been dead long enough. Feels almost disrespectful.

Hmmm ... if they MUST remake the film, then I can think of a lot of WORSE choices to play Mr. Miyagi.

In effect though, someone already DID remake the Karate Kid. Has anyone ever seen the movie "Showdown" with Billie Blanks?

You do know that Pat Morita knew absolutely no Karate when he took the role, right? In terms or martial arts, Jackie Chan is far more qualified for the part.

I don't think he was talking about Pat Morita actually knowing karate. I think he is talking about the stylistic difference. Jackie chan is an expert in Kung Fu which is Chinese. While the character Miagi's style is pretty much Japanese karate, specifically GoJu Ryu.

And I totally agree with him... It's lame. I still can't believe they are actually doing a real remake of this...

They should just watch Showdown with Billy Blanks like Matacron mentioned.

Not to be picky, but it's Billy Blanks. And yes, Steve has it on DVD. The kid was pretty good at martial arts but couldn't act if his life depended on it. Talons of the Eagle and Balance of Power were two of his better films.
