Columbia Pictures has refashioned its new version of the 1984 hit The Karate Kid as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith, reports Variety.

The film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Jaden's father Will Smith and Ken Stovitz.

The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.

The younger Smith, who next stars in The Day the Earth Stood Still, is a martial arts practitioner.

Mixed feelings about this at the minute. Mr Miyagi is a role that shouldn't be messed with, or recast if that is going to be the case. Plus Jaden Smith is about 10? So it could be transformed into a kids movie. I guess we shall see how it pans out.

I think this could go either way. If they're going to do it, they need to keep it VERY realistic.

ACTUALLY, there was already a remake MADE, only they didn't call it "The Karate Kid." To tell you the truth, it WASN'T technically a remake, but the plot was I-DEN-TI-CAL.

Anyone ever hear of a movie called "Showdown" with Billy Blanks? It may as well have been a Karate Kid ramake, except it was MUCH more realistic ...

Kid moves to new state and new school. Kid runs into the "king" of the school who proceeds to kick his ass when he starts talking to his girl. Kid runs into wise janitor (played by Billy Blanks) who beats down the bully and trains kid to fight against him in a tournament.

It's SUCH a hard movie to find, and I've NEVER seen it on DVD. I thank God that I was able to record it on VHS when it came on HBO.

I just puked in my mouth a little bit.

As much of the country is left stranded for Christmas due to a storm, I wonder what are their thoughts on the credibility of Global Warming? HAHA...

Been saying this for YEARS

This just goes to show, Hollywood is out of ideas. I won't see this movie even when it hits TBS late night.
