May 13, 2008 — As part of its tenth anniversary celebration, the CineVegas Film Festival will host a special charity screening of Warner Bros. Pictures' Get Smart on Sunday, June 15, at Planet Hollywood Resort Casino, with proceeds benefiting The Rock Foundation and its special program, Project Knapsack. Founded by Get Smart star Dwayne Johnson, who will attend the event, The Rock Foundation provides programs designed to enrich and empower the lives and self-esteem of children worldwide. The organization's educational initiative is exhibited by its support of Project Knapsack, a pen-pal and school-supply program between American students and their peers in developing countries. The program strives to enhance the current level of primary education and reduce barriers affecting student learning. Prior to the screening, Johnson will be presented with a Brenden Celebrity Star by Johnny Brenden, president and CEO of Brenden Theatres, at the Brenden Theatres at the Palms Casino Resort.
"This special screening of Get Smart is a win-win for everybody involved. Not only do we get to offer the city of Las Vegas a sneak peek of one of the summer's most highly anticipated films, but it will also benefit The Rock Foundation, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the implementation of Project Knapsack at Reynaldo L. Martinez Elementary School in Las Vegas," said CineVegas President Robin Greenspun. "This event further cements CineVegas' commitment to giving back to the local community, which has given so much support to the Festival over the past ten years."
In the all-new action comedy Get Smart, directed by Peter Segal, Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) is on a mission to thwart the latest plot for world domination by the evil crime syndicate known as KAOS. When the headquarters of U.S. spy agency CONTROL is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the Chief (Alan Arkin) has no choice but to promote his ever-eager analyst Maxwell Smart, who has always dreamt of working in the field alongside stalwart superstar Agent 23 (Dwayne Johnson). Smart is partnered instead with the only other agent whose identity has not been compromised: the lovely-but-lethal veteran Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway). As Smart and 99 get closer to unraveling KAOS' master plan - and each other - they discover that key KAOS operative Siegfried (Terence Stamp) and his sidekick Shtarker (Kenneth Davitian) are scheming to cash in with their network of terror. Given little field experience and even less time, Smart - armed with nothing but a few spy-tech gadgets and his unbridled enthusiasm - must defeat KAOS if he is to save the day.
Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a Mosaic Media Group / Mad Chance / Callahan Filmworks Production of a Peter Segal Film: Get Smart was written by Tom J. Astle & Matt Ember, based on characters created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. Andrew Lazar, Charles Roven, Alex Gartner and Michael Ewing are the producers, with Peter Segal, Steve Carell, Brent O'Connor, Jimmy Miller, Dana Goldberg and Bruce Berman serving as executive producers. Get Smart opens nationwide on Friday, June 20, 2008.
A portion of the funds raised from the screening will be used to establish The Rock Foundation's Project Knapsack at Reynaldo L. Martinez Elementary School in Las Vegas, providing school supplies and educational resources for the school as well as for their partner school in a developing country. Remaining funds raised will directly benefit and support The Rock Foundation's programs and help the foundation expand Project Knapsack into additional schools and countries. Tickets for the benefit range from $25 - $45 and can be purchased by calling 1-888-8VEGAS8, by visiting www.cinevegas.com, or at the CineVegas Box Office at the Brenden Theatres at the Palms Casino Resort beginning June 2. A limited number of sponsorship packages, including a meet and greet with Dwayne Johnson, may also be purchased.
