I wonder about which version of the love story they are going to base the movie on, or if it will be completely "non-literature" based.

There's too many versions of the story to choose from:

The oldest and perhaps best known is:

"Tristan et Iseult" written by Chritien de Troyes in 1155.

There'a also Bedier and a couple of German versions from which derive the Wagner opera.

Now I've read the Rosalind Miles books on Isolde. (she also wrote on Queen Elizabeth) so perhaps that's the books they'll base it on. They were much more in the romantic sense.

Anyway, have to look up some different versions of the story just for fun.

What about the version of Tristan's wife, the first Isolde, and she tells him black sails are carrying the first Isolde, and she dies after seeing him dead?

That is the version I like best.

Slowly some details are emerging about his film. Some of us may know the story from the opera.

Here's an article from SciFi Wire that talks about how the film is aiming more for a realistic love story set in the time of King Arthur, rather than a fantastical story.

James Franco is pretty intense, he'll make a good Tristan.

Here's a plot synopsis from Z review, which is usually pretty accurate.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Irish KING DONNCHADH (David OHara) brutally subjugates tribal England. There, young orphaned TRISTAN (James Franco) is raised by family ally LORD MARKE (Rufus Sewell). As a young man, the charismatic Tristan leads guerilla attacks on Irish occupying forces, ultimately defeating King Donnchadhs elite warriors. Believing himself to be mortally wounded, Tristan requests a funeral boat that eventually washes up on the Irish coast. Discovered by Irish Princess ISOLDE (Sophia Myles), the two fall passionately in love. All too soon Tristan must flee back to the safety of England. Meanwhile, King Donnchadh invites the English lords to contest for Isoldes hand, hoping to cause further discord among the bickering English barons. Unaware of Isoldes identity, Tristan fights in the tournament as Markes champion. Tristan is victorious but is devastated to learn Isoldes true identity. Lord Marke weds Isolde and prepares to become King of the now united England, ruining Donnchadhs plan. Despite their best efforts to stay apart, Tristan and Isolde eventually resume their affair. When King Donnchadh arrives in England for Markes coronation, he deviously unmasks the affair causing an English rebellion. Lord Marke forgives Tristan and Isolde as they defend Castle DOr from Irish troops. Tristan leads a battle against the Irish but is fatally wounded. As Lord Marke leads the reunited English troops to drive out the Irish, Tristan dies peacefully in Isoldes arms.
