I had only seen 2 episodes of Firefly before seeing this. Firefly isn't the best sci-fi show around.
Coming into this film I had below average hopes that this would be b-grade, stright-to-dvd material.
The film started very off beat and fast taking no time to introduce any characters (probably because most people know them).
The first scene introduces River Tam as a young girl, at some spiritual class. Things go hell wrong and we find out that its just a just a flash back that a teenage River is having while being sedated and having tests done (reading her mind) in a testing facility.
A man from the "government" comes to witness these tests, little does anyone know that he is actually Rivers brother coming to help her escape and a dam fine job he does.
They escape and in come Ejiofor (stuff spelling the first name) and is he angry, kills everyone in the room.
Hes now on the hunt for River who is now with her brother on the Serenity.
The first hour of the film was very slow, feeling more like a TV show with good CGI.
The film pays off with an amazing, memorable score and a great space battle (involving hundreds of ships), which just about equals the one at the start of Star Wars Ep III. The fight takes place at the end of the film as the crew of the Serenity, are on their way to see Mr. Universe to let everyone in on a little secret that was kept.
The best scene was a sick one involving River taking on about 50 Reavers in a small room, using a sword and an axe, which some pretty cool music being played.
1 or 2 well loved character of the Serenity die (wont say who) and the comic relief is amazing in this film, with a funny joke being said even in horrible situations (probably the only reason the film got a pg-13) but maybe I saw an uncut version of the film, I will have to wait and see, but I do know that this was 100% completed.
Film has just about got the best sound of the year I can tell you that. Some of the unique effects they use (a great one when the Serenity lands on some planet and flies down through a silo in the ground. The sound echos and makes you feel like your going down through the hole as well).
3 1/2 for me, only because the directing felt fast (like a TV show) and the first hour was slow and a little corny, but the end made up for that one.
