Anticipation Level:
How excited (or not) I am to see this movie...
Plot:Six months after the rage virus was inflicted on the population of the British Isles, the US Army helps to secure a small area of London for the survivors to repopulate and start again. But not everything goes to plan.

Cast: Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Amanda Walker, Shahid Ahmed, Harold Perrineau, Catherine McCormack, Garfield Morgan, Emily Beecham, Idris Elba, Beans El-Balawi, Imogen Poots, Chris Ryman, Mackintosh Muggleton, Meghan Popiel.

My Thoughts:Solid followup to "28 Days Later"

Review:28 Weeks Later" follows alot of the necessary rules to making a good sequel. Number one, picking up where ut's predecessor left off, and number two keeping the story on track. "28 Weeks" manages to do all of those things, thereby turning out to be an excellent followup to "28 Days Later". The film takes place back in Britain where a small area of the country has been secured for the survivors to live in. But the infected still remain lurking around, and soon find their way into that area causing yet another outbreak and splitting a man named Don (Robert Carlyle) from his family when they attack his families cottage. Don manages to escape, but the rest of his family isn't so lucky....or so it seems. Soon after the attack, Don fresh out of quarantine...reunites with his two children Andy and Tammy and they move on to start a new life in an uninfected part of Britain secured by U.S. forces.

Everything seems fine, until Don's thought to be dead wife is found alive and in shock. Early tests reveal her to be a carrier of the virus but yet a rare something in her blood has kept her from becoming a crazed rager like the others. However, the fact that she's a carrier still makes her a danger, and it isn't long before that danger becomes a reality and "it" starts all over again. "28 Weeks Later" isn't as smart as it's predecessor but it makes do with what it has at it's disposal. It feels more like a real sequel, and a cash-in sequel all rolled into one. While the character development isn't as strong as it was in the first film, and instead the characters resemble the cardboard military types you'd see in a film like "Resident Evil Apocalypse"... writers Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Rowan Joffe still manage to make them likeable people that you'd feel comfortable rooting for.

The story is for the most part, a copy of the way the first film played out. There's no new twists thrown in as there usually are with sequels to zombies films or films with a zombie element. The basic jist of "28 Weeks" is once the rage virus outbreak happens yet again...panic, bloodshed, and chaos ensue, and a selected group of people manage to escape the city where you know they will be picked off one by one until what's left of the group makes it to safety. The best performances of the film are given by Imogen Poots as Tammy and Mackintosh Muggleton as Andy, the only two children in the film.

While most kids in survival/horror films usually turn out to be annoying and have you tapping your fingers waiting for someone to come along and bump them off, these two manage to give great performances and in fact become the characters that you'd most pull for to survive the ordeal. Especially considering the fates of their parents in the picture. "28 Weeks Later" delivers alot of drama and suspense with many chilling scenes that are set in the dark or very dimly lit places which really add a sinister tone to the film and make for a much more gripping viewing experience, but it also doesn't forget the action element as well. As the film delivers alot of scenes of ragers chasing, eating, and attacking various people.

As well as on the other side, lots of gunfire, explosions, and exciting chase scenes set on large bodies of land such as fields and stadiums. The camera work by Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo isn't as sharp as Danny Boyle's in "28 Days" but it takes a different approach, giving alot more close ups of the films antagonists instead of the many far away shots that "28 Days" had. The ending of the picture wasn't much of a surprise, even though it did come as a bit of an annoyance as well.

It's kind of a little bit of both, but ultimately it's a satisfactory climax. "28 Weeks Later" doesn't do much in the realm of adding new wrinkles to it's overall design, and basically churns out "28 Days Later" all over again just with a whole new cast and a tad bit more suspense. Despite that though, the film still manages to be an enjoyable 90 minute ride that packs in enoough blood, gore, and flesh ripping-action that should keep the viewer interested for the duration.

Positives:Great performances by Muggleton and Poots. Lots of blood and gore.

Negatives:Basically a recycled story, the dark scenes were a bit too dark and lacked the necessary visibility.

Overall:Solid followup to "28 Days Later" that still holds steady despite not changing it's overall formula very much.
