well lets see......
1: if you were them would you rather walk miles at a time out in the open, with no lit streets, and only a bat and machete, in the dark or in the daylight?
in the daylight you can see death coming, and take a few swings at it before you go down.
2: you never see zombie's eating each other so i guess they just sacrifice for the storyline on that point.
or it could be that it's built into the virus as it was made in a lab, and you wouldnt want the infected hosts wiping themselves out.
