February 29, 2004 — The Passion of the Christ was the #1 film at the weekend box office, earning an estimated $76.2 million worth of tickets for the three days beginning Feb. 27. That would make it the seventh-best three-day opener of all time, and the best for a new release in February. Since Wednesday, the film has earned $117.5 million.
50 First Dates, starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, slipped to second place with $12.6 million in its third-weekend. The film has grossed $88.7 million since first opening.
Twisted, a cop thriller starring Ashley Judd and Samuel L. Jackson, opened at #3 with $9.1 million.
Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen was #4 with $6.1 million. Havana Nights: Dirty Dancing, a sequel of sorts to the 1987 hit "Dirty Dancing," opened at No. 5 with $5.9 million. The low-budget comedy Club Dread, from the five-man troupe behind sleeper hit Super Troopers, opened at No. 10 with $3.0 million. As expected, the film did well with college crowds.
