As ANNOYING as it is, I can't fathom anyone who came up with the idea for the "It's A Small World" ride being a racist.
Exactly.
But if anything, it stems from the fact that they made the film "Song of the South", which was a collection of African American folk tales told during the Reconstruction after the Civil War.
The stories do not always paint a pretty picture of of their lives, which is true to their experiences at the time. To me, that isn't rasist, but rather a quasi-historical look at a very bad time in our history. There is a reason the film won 4 Acadamy Awards and was considered a benchmark in race relations in the 1940's. Harry Truman, who integrated the Army in 1951 during the Korean War, sited the film as one of the most inspirational films he had ever seen.
The simple fact is that Disney was all about racial harmony. Disneyland was one of the first amusment parks to enact an anti-discrimination policy. Disney was the first studio to hire African Americans in lead feature roles. They were also one of the first to hire Chineese in lead roles.
I realise most of you probably are unaware of the fact that Asians were considered the lowest of all social classes, but it was that way for about 200 years here. Ironically, it wasn't untill we started going to war against Asian countries in the 20th Century that the stigma dissapeared. February 3, 1959
