Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) is a lonely housewife "too old to be young and too young to be old," when she meets Ninny Threadgoode, an outgoing elderly woman, in a nursing home. As their unlikely bond grows, Ninny shares a remarkable tale of love, devotion and a friendship that triumphs over a multitude of obstacles. She relates the story of Idgie Threadgoode and Ruth Jamison (Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker), two young women in 1920's Alabama who form a lifelong attachment. The pair opens a cafe in their tiny home town of Whistlestop, where their friendship sustains them, helping Ruth survive an abusive marriage and allowing them to rise above the small-minded scrutiny of their town. The inspiring story sets Evelyn on a path to independence and a lasting friendship with Ninny. Based on the best selling novel Fried Green Tomatoes at The Whistlestop Cafe, the all-new anniversary DVD makes a very special Mother's Day gift for women of all ages. |
