In my mind there is no other piece of ofictional material quite like watchmen.
Its got it all, a complex multilayered story that still keeps you intrested until the very end.
And Alan Moore, what a genius that man is to dream up a story that is so very complex but understandable.

Neil Gaiman's Sandman is better

I never found a way to put this into words, but I've never cared much for Watchmen. When I read through for the first time, it was quite the average story, far from being the magnificent masterpeice that people have been putting it up as.

It's a good read, but its more a 'rental' read than something you got to own (if that makes any sense) ie. just borrow it off a friend for a week.

There are a lot of better graphic novels and stories out there (ie. Sandman) and as for the movie, it really did capture the novel that I read, definatly a rental.

Thank you, I totally forgot about Preacher - Cassidy is awesome.

I thought the Watchmen was very good (I didn't bother seeing the film) and unique at the time and Moore is a twisted genius, but now there many other standalone novels/ongoing books out there that offer more in terms of character development and story, not only the ones that have been mentioned here, you could also throw in "Transmetropolitan" for example, sprinkle on some "Walking Dead", add some "Constantine" and maybe some Lucifer (make sure you read Sandman first) for good measure

Lucifer's great. I'm only about half way through it so far though.

Anyway dude, if you haven't read these already, check these out and if you still feel the same way about Watchmen afterwards then so be it.

Must reads:
The Sandman - Preludes & Nocturnes (Gaiman is a great storyteller)
Constantine
Preacher - Gone to Texas
The Boys - Get Some (brilliant parodies of popular mainstream heroes - look out for a character called Tek Knight he has a unique problem)
Lucifer (make sure you read the first three volumes of The Sandman first)
V for Vendetta (IMO should have not been made into a film)

Optional
Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (because it's goddamn funny, in a twisted homicidal kinda way)
Transmetropolitan
Walking Dead

Those are my suggestions, these guys might add a few that I've missed

Merv Pumpkinhead is from Sandman. He's like the handy-man of The Dreaming doing maintenance to dreams.

I like Watchmen a lot, but I'd hardley say that it's completely unique. Heck, Alan Moore himself has written other Superhero Deconstruction stories; just read his Miracleman comics from the eighties (which I would imagine will be reprinted in the near future, being that Marvel just bought the rights to that character).

Anyhow my point is that while Watchmen is good, it's hardly "the best". All Star Superman is an amazing superhero story, as is Kingdom Come.

I've just started reading Walking Dead. I'm through the first two trades so far, and I've got to say, I'm loving every page of it. It's not often I read a comic that makes me want to re-read it as soon as I finish.

I love walking dead. It seems to really pit people in almost every realistic situation out there. Very graphic and bone chilling. I am also a fan of a lot of marvel works. The whole issue with race and prejudice always keeps me interested (I mean it in a good way were they push for equality)

It may be taken as a little concieted, but I'm the complete opposite (not on walking dead, Hail Robert Kirkman) race and prejudice are terribly over used topics and rather quite boring, they always believe themselves to be pushing towards equality while really only pushing the line towards equality even further.

Its because of storylines like that (X-men being the prime example-- wheres the consitency?) that I stopped buying anythign remotely related to Marvel.
