Here's my review that I've written of Watchmen (vs The Dark Knight)

***

Seriously, my world just turned upside down. Early in the year I forced myself to sit through Christopher Nolans painful but much hyped follow-up to the dreadfully mediocre Batman Begins. You know Christopher Nolan, the guy who made the brilliant and ambitious movie, Memento, following it with one of the decades smartest American movies, The Prestige. As a Batman fan, sitting through The Dark Knight was a physically painful affair: dire, clichid rubbish, an overly traditional man vs terrorist setup soaked to the brim in an unquestioning philosophy a mile or two to the right of Ann Coulter. The films parallels between the Joker and Al Qaeda were painfully obvious, and Batmans by any means necessary method simply turned the character into an unthinking Jack Bauer and the movie into an apology for the Bush regime. None of this is helped by its traditional, laboured A to B blockbuster structure, which constantly eschews things like characterization and thoughtfulness, instead willing us to leave our brains at home and enjoy the high octane action. Now, theres nothing wrong with the occasional thrill ride, but Batmans tired car chases and fuzzy fight scenes dont try very hard to offer anything new or creative.

After this, I did not approach the big screen adaptation of Watchmen with enthusiasm. The fact that it was to be directed by Zack Snyder was certainly a factor, since his directorial efforts up to this point had been an indifferent, watered down remake of a Romero movie and 300, a movie so awful in every sense of the word that the English language has no expletives strong enough to describe it. Not content to bask in the glories of its technical incompetence, its atrocious acting, its chronically retarded slo-mo sequences and an eye-bleedingly revolting CGI colour palette, 300 has to be one of the most offensive works ever to hit the silver screen.

No, I was not really looking forward to seeing Snyders massacre of Alan Moores revered graphic novel, Watchmen. But the hype machine, that sinister engine, somehow managed to arouse my curiosity to head to the cinema, bracing myself for an evening full of either pointing and laughing at the screen or cringing and wailing in despair. I was somewhat surprised, then, to find that the movies first scene gripped me by the throat , shoved me into a car, then sped me off on a rollercoaster ride lasting what felt like a very short two hours and forty minutes. Quite simply, I was putty in Snyders unclean hands, and by the time I left the theatre, I was convinced that Watchmen was one of the most important American films of the decade.

Close call, but TDK was more re-watchable. I extracted about all I could from Watchmen after two viewings.

Anyone check out the Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter DVD that came out on Tuesday?

I work for the company that's doing the marketing campaign for the DVD, though I have been assured I'm not getting a free copy lol.

I got a copy when it was released and I have to be honest, I was blown away! I loved the dark world of the watchmen 10 years ago when a friend lent me the graphic novels and I loved the world more in the film. Now this differing look makes me want to see more, I can't wait for the DVD release of the film!

Watchmen was awesome, but I thought that The Dark Knight was a better movie.

Well, I just saw it again and I've gotta say that it's even closer now.

As a former journalist, I am shocked and dismayed by how seriously people take reviews from these online blogger/magazines 'experts' get from internet readers.

I can't even find any credential on this webzine. It's a bunch of bloggers with opinions, like anyone else. While that's nice from a standpoint of free information, they have no professional credential in my eyes. They could be auto mechanics and hairdressers for all we know, in fact, they might even be Flat-earthers or some weird cult for all we know.

But this is what we have now for information and opinions.

Heck, we could publish CD poster opinions as a webzine. We might as well.

I'll go with TDK. It just Nolan went with an original story using a popular icon, while Snyder copy almost everything from the books. Copying everything from the books instead of using some original idea with bunch of comic book elements is lazy film making IMHO.

The Dark Knight is definately better, but Watchmen was also a great movie. Both are smarter than the average movie goer can handle when they walk in expecting a "comic book" movie.

I don't agree with that kind of criticism at all. Original screenplay or not, if it's a damn good movie then it's a damn good movie. Having a source material doesn't negate that.

Both movies changed the way how comic book movies are perceived. This is a good and a bad thing, but that's for another thread. TDK was a better movie, in part because of the acting, but mostly because Nolan was able to simplify a complex issue for most people to understand. In short, TDK was able to reach a broad audience without losing its integrity, whereas Watchmen was not.

Flat earthers...hahahaha...

Did anyone actually read the full review? I know I didn't. This poster whoever he is, is just trying to publicize himeslf on larger website, and yes, he could very well just be a barber or an automechanic for all we really know.

These one-off posts, and even posts from some of our naturalized posters, seem to be more flame-oriented than anything. Next we'll be taking 'Star Trek vs Teletubies...in 3D'

A "Star Trek vs Teletubies in 3D" thread would be tough though because they're both pretty damn similar.
