Spoilers abound!! But I am assuming everyone has read Watchmen, so there should be nothing shocking here.

Okay, let me start off by saying I liked the Watchmen book but can't really say it was the greatest comic event of all time. I just didn't care for it with that level of fervor and have voiced that opinion several times here.

The movie, on the other hand, was brilliant. It was the best qualities of the book but with a few of the less enjoyable parts removed. For example, I hated the giant squid thingy. Well, the movie eliminated it and used a more logical doomsday devise at the end.

I hated the brutal murder of the original Night Owl by the band of street thugs (who also killed his dog). Well, that was left out.

Everything else was there and I loved it.

The musical choices were amazing.
I also really enjoyed the acting, especially of Rorshach, Night Owl and Dr. Manhatten. Yes, I thought the actor who played Dr. Manhatten did an amazing job.

All in all, I recommend this film. But be warned, it is just as bloddy and depressing at times as the original. Just with a more logical ending and no gratuitous murder of Night Owl 1.

I won't be seeing this til tomorrow but i'm very much looking forward to see it.

I haven't read the novel so maybe some bits will go over my head but this very muh looks like a film I would like.

PS - I did hear that the original Night Owl's death was in the film initially but it was the last scene to get cut to get the film under 157 mins.

Apparently it will be in the 3 hour directors cut DVD eventually along with the Black Freighter story.

I like the fact alot of people here have a positive review of the film and by the by have overlooked minor things within the film.

I think they only cut out some of the less enjoyable parts of the book.
And the opening song by Dillon (Times are a Changing) while showing things evolving from the 40's to the 80's was great.

i thought it was good. the only thing i have to say was the music choice for some scenes. spoilers follow. when i say bad music choice, i mean when dr. manhattan and laurie are on mars and she learns that the comedian was her father, and dr. manhattan admits hes wrong, i was really moved in the theater. and then, not to say i hate hendrix, but, that song totally butchered the moving heartfelt part of that scene. otherwise it was good. i'd give it a 7/10.

Agreed. One its own, I hate that song. But in the context of the film I loved that scene. There was only one song choice I didn't agree with, but I've already mentioned that. Awesome film . . .

Just seen the film and although i've never read the novel I did enjoy the majority of the film. (Still mulling over whether I would call the film as a whole a "masterpiece") but I loved most of the characters and the way they were protrayed.

Likes:

Rorschach was fantastic, the costume/voice/ unmasked look/ hard justice and uncomprimising attitude made him the star of the film.

I loved the ending and as sad as it was one of the deaths was necessary and added to that particular ending very well.

The violence was spot on, rather than shying away from it the film embrassed it.

Small things added to the film
Rorschach's splatted corpse making a pattern from his face mask and the recurring smiley face
The "villian" saying "I'm not a comic book villian" and thus setting the end scene in motion.

Recurring theme of "the joke"

Dislikes:

Some of the music IMO didn't quite fit the scene for me.

The montage near the beginning would have been better with rorschach's narration over the top of it (you'd understand if you've seen the film)

Again because I have read the novel some of the beginning was a little "what that about?" and I'd read alittle on wiki before I went, my friend who didn't know nothing did not have a clue what was going on.

Mainly the positives outweight the negatives for me and a second viewing could only make the film better.

PS - What was up with Nixons nose? Every scene he was in I was just looking at his conk. LOL
