Yes, I know that the movie has now been out for 33 days, and I was severely lagging in going to see it. I'm NOT USING SPOILER TAGS- so read on(You all have seen it by now) I also have to say that I probably read or looked at almost every spoiler for this movie(couldnt contain myself) and I was still plenty surprised by the film. So let me get started:
I've heard many complaints/opinions that people say that the 1st half of the movie is better than the 2nd. And after seeing it, I dont agree, but I do understand their arguement. Right away I was excited that the movie wastes no time to get the story going, and to be honest, I kept wishing that Tom and his ex-wife's scenes would just get over with(due to my excitement) but hey- character development, I know. Spielberg did an amazing job of building tension and "introducing" the aliens/ships. The lightning storms were brilliant, and added a spookiness since the audience knows that the lightning brings, unbeknownst to Ray & family. Also, the scene of the 1st Tripod emerging was one of the best I've seen. The way the city cracked and split, built up so much tension- One thing I thought was really great was the Tripods "foot" with the 3 toes emerging- I originally thought that was it through allt he smoke, etc. But it was great to show that it was only the begining.
This scene was def. one of the best I've seen, my only gripe about it could possibly be the "heat ray" effect of people, but turning them to ash isnt all that bad.
The opeing set up what I was hoping for a great 90 mins more, and I wasnt dissapointed. The scene with the mob and the van kinda disturbed me though, I guess because its such a true depiction of what it would be like, in such chaos. The Ferry Boat scene was great, especially the lights under the water rising up, and the shot of the tripods coming over the hill. OH! The scene of the jet crashing was terriffic- and a little freaky with just lights outside and sounds...very good.
The meeting w/ Tim Robbins character was alright, and Robbins def. can play a psycho. I was however surprised that Tom Cruise actually killed him...The entire scene of the tentacle search thingy was great, and reminded me soo much of the Raptor/Kitchen scene from JP, I swear some of the shots are the exact same! The mirror trick, and shoe was nice. I was a little dissapointed with the aliens look- thought it was a little too much like Independence Day, and they moved a little too animal like for me- and I thought they should look meaner, not with cute round faces. I actually caught myself thinking, "How can these aliens be too terrible? They have kitten faces!" Anyway- the ending....I didnt think it was horrible, but it seemed a bit rushed. I think being able to read about how the aliens got sick/etc and died in a book explains more than a couple sentences said by Morgan Freeman, but it all made sense to me. I could've done without the Tom Cruise action here scene with the grenades though. ALSO, I wasnt too fond of his son, trying to be a hero and what not....but the part of him letting him go to go and fight was done well.
The special effects in this movie were AWESOME. From the snaky way the tripods moved, to their heat rays, to all the destruction of buildings, it was all great.
I would not be surprised if War of the Worlds gets nominated and wins for Sound Effects/Editing for the Oscars. The sound in this movie was the best of any movie I've seen in theaters. The Tripod call was very eerie, you could literaly feel the lightning strikes, and the explosions etc. were awesome. man, when that fighter jet roared over head, it was awesome.
I had to sleep on this movie to figure out whether I really liked it, or not- and I did. If I had to give it stars, I'd probably give it 4. By keeping the story on the family and not turning it into a war movie(the scenes involving the military were quick and didn't detract from the main story worked well) I doubt it will go down as a Spielberg classic, but its acting, story, and effects make it a great film.

P.S.- Maybe next week I'll finally see Batman Begins before it gets taken out
