As mentioned by someone else.. just not logical, although I understand the movie is based on a book where the point of view is the crazy rifle man??
Why do we see clothing fluttering down from the sky during the middle part of the movie?
Also, crazy rifle man,
Are we to assume the man who harbored Dakota and Cruise's characters is the main character of the original book?
Firstly, id say don't "assume" anything

Second, the clothes fluttering was odd, but made sense ONLY becuase of the beggining
when people were being blasted only bits of clothes remained
.

And finally, that shotgun guy should not be interpreted as any character from the book, and nor should any other characters (well he is VERY similar to the soldier who wanted to dig a tunnel and live underground though, except older maybe :P) it is set in America in the modern day don't forget, none of the characters are brits (storyline wise, or cast wise i believe) whereas the original was based in colonial britain with (you guessed it) brits.

Actually Ogilvy isn't the main Character of the book, also Ogilvy from the movie is a combination of three characters. In the book Ogilvy is a good friend of the protagonist and is an astronimer(sp?).
They built him up as being essential in the movie but he is one of the people killed in the first heat ray shot, very surprising actually.
. The second guy was an unnamed man
who is stuck with the protagonist in a basement for a couple of days, the guy would try to sneak food as much as he could and eventually went crazy and started shouting after seeing the aliens feed off a man. The protagonist killed him in order to save himself, there was no daughter.
. Finally the third guy was a soldier who bumped into him near the begining of the book and taught him how to survive(somewhat) but later at the end
they meet again, and at this point the soldier has realised the severity of the situation and tells the protagonist how the aliens want to wipe us out, maybe even breed us like cows and even keep some of us as pets and have them help hunt "wild" humans, since we would have to live underground. The soldier lives, but the last time we see him he's digging a hole in the basement, later that day the protagonist decides he wants to see the flying machine the soldier was talking about and sneaks off and sees the Tripods standing still and some fallen with the crows flying around or eating the exposed aliens, ... yada yada yada
So ya, he's the combination of three characters, two were unnamed and Ogilvy
didn't even get past the second or third chapter
but had a name so thats why he was in the movie.

Shoes are heavier than clothes, so they'd fall alot faster.

Just a quick check-in after giving it more thought, is it possible the fluttering clothes are
Leftovers from people getting consumed by the "vagina" like machine?
Also, I visited the public domain War of the Worlds book, and read the WHOLE dang thing yesterday. Yes, my eyes were bugging out after I finished.

And yes, I had a bit of trouble sleeping last night. The book was well-written, and especially if you consider it was written 107 yrs ago, long before us kids grew up on Star Wars movies and the walking tanks, etc.

I read an interview with one of the production people, who said that the clothes were
all that was left of people that were harvested. My own theory, and that coincides with the book's theme; is that the Aliens knew they were infected, and were capturing people for use as lab rats. The book even mentions them draining their blood, probably to determine what antibodies were in it, to see if they could come up with an antidote.Obviously it didn't work!
But the book said the Martians didn't have a digestive system, so they nourished themselves by injecting their veins with blood directly?

Thanks for your investigative reporting, Cosmo, since you've seen it a few more times than I have. I can't wait to see it again, though. The
falling clothes and the bodies in the river, all very creepy.
But in the basement I saw one of the aliens drinking water or something? If they don't have digestion systems why would they drink the water?
