Reposting Cosmo's thoughts...

Quote:

OMG..wow for WOW. wow

How do i say anything without spoiling anything. Well the film rocked, let me say that. Any spoilers will be in spoiler captions.

Ill let you in on 2 spoilers that you will find out at the start of the film or you have seen in the trailer

1
Morgan Freeman nurrated the start of the films opening sequence
2
the bridge was brought down by lasers..in the film its totally different from the trailer
everyone who was in frame on this film deserves an Oscar. The film always kept with Ray and never left him (once or twice).

THE BEST CGI IN THE HISTORY OF CINEMA only 1 thing in the film looked fake and it was nothing big, it involves dirty or dust, but you may notice it.

Im gona see it again in 4 hours (midnight screening), i still cant believe that america isnt having midnight screenings.

if you just read that..you will now no nothing..lol

BAD ELEMENTS OF THE FILM
-way to much time was spent in basements

-a couple of mistakes...in 1 shot you can see someones bum crack and in the next their pants are pulled up.

-when the lightning strikes EVP kicks in, disabling everything electronic, yet in the next scene we see a dude with a video camera

this film is a must see in cinemas..probably why it will make so much...batman and star wars..well they were great but easly watched on dvd

Just to correct Cosmo on the Midnight Screenings in America. Most of the Theaters here in the Phoenix area in Arizona have midnight showings going on now as we speak.

I am seeing it in thirteen hours. Sadly we had no midnight showings (we had them for Batman and Star Wars but not thismakes no sense) From what I have heard this film is going to rock. Just one quick question for those who have seen it. Is it Spielbergs best?

That's a tough question hulk, it's up there near the top although it's much darker than anything he's done before I think so it's hard to compare...my gut says maybe it is but gee that's a hard question to answer....

My cousin saw it at midnight last night in Phoenix and said it was by far his best at least since Indiana Jones and Jaws. He said the horror in this is unlike some movies truly horrorifying. I am assuming that taking my little cousin (9) to see this is a bad idea then?

ive seen it twice, first was in a kinda crap cinema...small screen..crap chairs..but man was the sound good..when the first one came out of the ground..the whole place was shaking..i went with a chick and she was looking at me with disbeliefe to see if i was doing it.

it wasnt even in widescreen..totally sucked and you could hear the projection..max of 150 seats in the cinema..then i saw it again at midnight (5 hours later) and it was huge...700 seats..best sounds...best seats...and only 50 people in there (its not a big midnight thing).

the butt crack was funny...a hell of alot of people have picked up on the video camera mistake

Yahoo has great pictures of the "celebs" from the red carpet and yes it's true, Tom Cruise signed autographs forEVAH and yes it HELD UP THE SCREENING. Well worth it though, got to stare at Adrien Brody a bunch, somehow that makes the time just fly by.

Excellent movie. Really played on what has happened in America in the past four years. Effects were outstanding. It was pretty gruesome could probably have been rated R. Very strong PG-13 most definately. The acting was surperb all around. The directing excellent. very easily one of his best movies of all time. I will post a better review later I have to run.

Here's a link to Susanne's review from our Monday night experience y'all.
Click to Read Susanne's Review of WOW! Although she did forget to add the bit where I ran up and tackled Adrien Brody so I could lick the whole left side of his face...she said it was in best interests.

I thought it was really good. Great cast, great CGI, great story. Just one little thing that stuck with me:
I caught something just after Ray bent down and grabbed that freezing cold rock. When the ground started to shake and the people started to back up, Ray and the two guys he was talking to earlier are smiling and laughing...
lol I know it's little but that sorta thing bugs me, and it bothered me the rest of the movie...

THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
! That was the greatest film ever. This is a major spoiler but my favorite/most intense part of the movie.
When Ray and Ogivily are like in the basement with Rachel, then Ogivily is makinga lot of noise with the shovel trying to dig a hole underground, he is making a lot of noise and Ray tells him that if he keeps making that noise the aliens are gonna hear them and of course that Ray wanted to protect his daughter but Ogivily wouldnt shut up, so then when Ray asks him to be quiet once again. Ogivily hits him in his shoulder with the shovel. After that Ray goes back to the other part of the basement with Rachel and then he covered her eyes with a piece of clothing and told her to sing her song and not listen to anything that was going on. So after Ray covered her eyes and asked her to sing to herself he stood up and went inside the room that Ogivily was in. He closed the door and the last thing we heard were two men fighting violently. A few seconds later Ray comes out with blood in his face. He had to kill Ogivily for the survival of him and his daughter.
Here is my official review of War of the Worlds,

War of the Worlds is one of the most beloved novels ever written. Author H.G. Wells sci-fi horror was something no one had ever read or heard of at the time. Spielberg brilliantly portays the horror and intensity of the book in his screen adaption.

Set in New York city present time it starts off with a Dad who is to be honest an ass hole stuck with his kids for the weekend. We then move to a lightning storm which is pretty cool and then finally to the tripods. After this it is just Ray (the dad) running away from death and trying to survive with his two kids Robbie and Rachel.

The movie is amazing. The effects are to be honest the best of the year. Just as ood as ROTS. The tripods looks real as does the destruction they cause.

The acting is top notch. Fanning perfectly catches and portrays the fear that a kid who age would be going through. Cruise is very good at being an ass and his performance is oscar worthy.

The directing superb. Spielberg brilliantly crafts this movie to where it feels real and seems real. It;s as though were there in the midst of the carnage.

Cinematography (SP?) was excellent. Instead of doing wide aerial views Spielberg keeps the camera most of the time level with the actors to show us the fear they felt which is why we likely felt the horror they felt more.

Score was excellent. there was alot of good horror sounds and music that put you on the edge of your seat. It really mixed well with what was happening.

The film also emotionally impacts you as you see this dad struggling to keep his children alive. As he trys to live with all he has seen. As well as that we see images that many of us saw during 9/11. Which also makes this movie more terrorfying and emotional for us all.

A caution to parents,

This movie is extremely violent, chilling and disturbing. If you felt because this is a Spielberg film he won't put stuff that will horrorify kids at least under the age of 12 your wrong. He gruesomely portrays the novel (not blood wise it's just a graphic movie full of stuff that will likely scare the younger viewers.)

A very well made film.

P.S. did anyone see anything wrong with the ending? All the critics complained about was the last 15 minutes I thought the ending was fine.

This movie was amazing! Its just so intense, I love it. I thought for sure Cuise's recent mental problems would distract me from the actual movie, but I never even gave it a thought throughout the entire movie lol.

I was only dissapointed with
the fact that there was no "Black Smoke" and no Thunder Child. Though I could see why they had no Thunder Child but why did they skip the "Black Smoke"
Actually when I saw that, it reminded me of exactly what the mood was like when the aliens first landed. In the book
people were laughing, excited, or confused but most were intrigued, right up till the alien made an appearance, then they didn't know what to do till the first group of people burst into flames. Thats when it became obvious that the only thing they could do was run
This movie is absoulty incredible. Everything in it was perfect. I was amazed about how well it stayed true to the book. All the actors were great. This is Tom Cruise's best movie ever. Dakota Fanning was great as always. It's creepy of how good of an actor she is. She is great in every movie she is in. The actor who played his son was good too. At times i really wanted to beat the crap out of the kid, like when
he leaves the family to go see the army battle the aliens.
. I love how we never saw anything more than Ray and the family saw. We only knew as much as they did. Unlike Independence Day were they show you everything that is going on. I love when you don't know what else is going on in the world. Just like in Signs, it makes the movie even more creepy, because you don't know what's going on. My only complaint is that they didn't explain the Red Weed. Of course i know what it was because i've read the book, but the average movie goer doesn't know what it is. This is the third movie to almost make me cry. The other two were ROTS and Man on Fire (another great movie with Dakota Fanning)

This movie was fantastic until the end heres why.
The kid found his way to boston(which is the only city left perfect cuz boston has a lot of bacteria i guess) nevermind the fact he survived but he friggin found his way to boston. how!?! did the dead soldiers lead him there!?!? is he fire proof!?!? is he michael myers!!? If i see one more fanning reaction shot in my lifetime please someone end my life right now! the action scenes were so gr8 that you could look past stupid things happening but that friggin ending man was pure garbage. the whole movie i have all these questions that i know will be answered right? wrong! the blood ok they use it make roots of somekind....why!?!?!?! tell me morgan freeman! tell me!! so tom cruise shoves gernades up this ship's ass finds time and space to put the pins in his mouth ok i'll let that slide cuz its a movie but damn its dumb. guys batman begins is a comic book movie and more realism was in that then this. these super smart beings from outer space who've planned this for millions of years had their ships underground forever. created lasers that will destroy everything didnt take the time to take a breathe of air!?!?! "geez these we're perfect killing machine aliens yet we dont have the technology to run an atomosphere test. what omg i cant breathe!! bacteria what!?!?! whats bacteria?!?! i'm alien i create weapons of death but please dont ask me how the weather is!" this garbage ending was just throw together. and it ruined a nice film i mean this film with any other ending is a classic sci-fi film. but come on guys. please dont defend such a stupid ending. this is a movie that draws so much power from mystery and fear of what we dont know and to just explain it by putting a string of fancy useless words together instead of saying bacteria. out of fear that people may say bacteria wtf!? this damn ending is so damn stupid. i want my dvd with an alternate ending and i want it now.
For those of you who haven't seen this movie, don't waste your money. It was horrible! Spielberg should be ashamed to put his name on this film. I was really looking forward to seeing this movie and I even sort of accepted the fact that the lead character would protecting his kid, even though the story was about a man alone facing an unknown terror, as well as his mortality and that of the human race. The abject terror of being alone and isolated in a seething sea of humanity doesn't happen here. All we see is "Ray" yelling at his kids alot and Cruise doesn't bring any personal pain or conflict to his character at all. Even in the scene where he crys, it's not believable. I guess they knew Cruise couldn't carry this movie by himself so they threw in a bratty teenager and a cute kid who screams alot to fill in the gaps in what Cruise trys to pass of as acting nowdays. This will make his fourth lousy movie in a row and I think it's time he got out of the business. I personally won't waste time or money on MI3 if it ever gets done.

Speaking of not believable, the CGI in this film was really poor. Watching the tripod walkers was like watching a cartoon that puked up orange stuff every where it went and in many scenes where Cruise is running away from things blowing up behind him, the editing was so crappy, it was obvious green screen. Also when I first saw the aliens themselves I couldn't get over how familiar they looked. I knew I'd seen them before and later on it came to me. They're a direct rip-off from ID4! If you remember the scene where Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum wave at the alien on the mothership just before they blow the nuke, you could swear they're from the same planet or even be the same alien the evolved somewhat. Why didn't they create something new instead of reworking some one else's stuff.

I sort of knew the film was going to have problems when Spielberg changed the way the aliens first appeared. The whole scene about watching the end of the cylinder unscrew in the smoking pit was one of the most suspensefull parts, but instead they chose to just blow stuff up. What really disturbed me greatly was the fact that the audience laughed throughout the film as if it were a comedy. The scene that got the biggest laugh was
after Ray had protected her from seeing most of the horrible stuff in the begining of the movie, Dakota's character sees the dead bodys floating down the river and realizes what a terrible thing is really happening.
This scene wasn't funny, it was meant to be very disturbing and everyone thought it was just hysterical. If viewers are laughing at a serious film, something is definately wrong.

There were a lot of details left out of the script about the aliens that were important to understanding the story, the aliens and why we were invaded and they were nicely explaned in the original film, but here we only got a gloss over partial script that had no real firm story line to speak of. When the movie let out, most of the people coming out were looking at each other like they weren't sure what they just saw. It certainly wasn't War of the Worlds. At least not the one we were promised by Spielberg in the trailers. This movie was insulting to H.G. Wells classic story and a complete affront the the original classic film. This was plainly just one lousy movie.

well obviously you don't read books, because it's been that way for a hundred years.
the martians put the ships there millions of years right? well a million years ago, humans didn't exist, neither did the bacteria that killed them, use your brain next time before you criticise something you don't know anything about.
my review of war of the worlds,

***1/2/****

Special effects are top notch, everything is top of the line in the movie.

*spoilers within*

the movie starts off with the narrator
(morgan freeman)
basically saying what was said in the first teaser trailer for the movie.

it starts off ray's (tom cruise) ex wife drops their kids off robbie and rachel. this is the only time you see her until the end so she's only in it for a couple of minutes, so you never get the chance to care about her.

it picks up fast, and never lets you go. it starts off
w/ the buried tripods in the ground coming out and frying everybody and blowing everything up with the heat rays.
you will get genuinely scared during this movie, and you see the destruction through tom cruise's character and his kids. never once do you see a news clip or the film going to some scene showing the rest of the world. you just know the rest of the world is getting destroyed. it stays on ray and his kids the entire time.

when you see what makes up the red plant like stuff you see in the trailers and on the posters, you will be like OMG. especially when they show how it's made. *creepy stuff*

as with the info that
robbie is shown being vaporized isn't true, you don't see him anything, they just cut away so you assume that he was.
while they're on the hill, you can hear the fighting going on over the hill but they never show it, it's good that they don't because you can imagine something worse than anything they can show you. and that's what you do is imagine the worst. back to robbie.
that's how he can appear at the end in boston. and with her saying boston didn't receive any damage, there's a clear shot of downtown boston, and it's basically gone. just the part where ray's ex-wife lives is relatively destruction free.
and the ending is abrupt, all of the sudden they show
a tripod all wobbly and and then ray points out and tells them to look at birds on the tripod, then the national guard in the area unleashes fire on the tripod (i guess since the martians were infected w/ the cold, they put the shields down on their tripods). and they bring it down, then it does to a wide shot of some part of boston w/ tripods falling, and then ray and robbie and rachel reuniting w/ their mom.
then
morgan freeman
(the narrator) comes and says that humans
couldn't stop them that we unleashed everything and didn't do anything, but the minute the martian breathed our air and ate and drank , the simple bacteria that our body kills everyday brings them down.
the end.

it's really good, some parts are suspenceful and some are genuinely terrifying. i didn't give everything, because this movie needs to be watched. it feels like a typical blockbuster in some parts, but you come to care about what happens to ray and rachel (not really robbie, because he's gone for the 2nd half of the movie). and you see the destruction through their eyes and what happens to the billion other people.

again 3 and a half stars out of 4. go see it, you won't be disappointed.
