This movie was amazing! Its just so intense, I love it. I thought for sure Cuise's recent mental problems would distract me from the actual movie, but I never even gave it a thought throughout the entire movie lol.
I was only dissapointed with
the fact that there was no "Black Smoke" and no Thunder Child. Though I could see why they had no Thunder Child but why did they skip the "Black Smoke"
Outsider2487 said: I thought it was really good. Great cast, great CGI, great story. Just one little thing that stuck with me:
I caught something just after Ray bent down and grabbed that freezing cold rock. When the ground started to shake and the people started to back up, Ray and the two guys he was talking to earlier are smiling and laughing...
lol I know it's little but that sorta thing bugs me, and it bothered me the rest of the movie...
Actually when I saw that, it reminded me of exactly what the mood was like when the aliens first landed. In the book
people were laughing, excited, or confused but most were intrigued, right up till the alien made an appearance, then they didn't know what to do till the first group of people burst into flames. Thats when it became obvious that the only thing they could do was run
Oh snap!! This thread just got served

For those of you who haven't seen this movie, don't waste your money. It was horrible! Spielberg should be ashamed to put his name on this film. I was really looking forward to seeing this movie and I even sort of accepted the fact that the lead character would protecting his kid, even though the story was about a man alone facing an unknown terror, as well as his mortality and that of the human race. The abject terror of being alone and isolated in a seething sea of humanity doesn't happen here. All we see is "Ray" yelling at his kids alot and Cruise doesn't bring any personal pain or conflict to his character at all. Even in the scene where he crys, it's not believable. I guess they knew Cruise couldn't carry this movie by himself so they threw in a bratty teenager and a cute kid who screams alot to fill in the gaps in what Cruise trys to pass of as acting nowdays. This will make his fourth lousy movie in a row and I think it's time he got out of the business. I personally won't waste time or money on MI3 if it ever gets done.
Speaking of not believable, the CGI in this film was really poor. Watching the tripod walkers was like watching a cartoon that puked up orange stuff every where it went and in many scenes where Cruise is running away from things blowing up behind him, the editing was so crappy, it was obvious green screen. Also when I first saw the aliens themselves I couldn't get over how familiar they looked. I knew I'd seen them before and later on it came to me. They're a direct rip-off from ID4! If you remember the scene where Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum wave at the alien on the mothership just before they blow the nuke, you could swear they're from the same planet or even be the same alien the evolved somewhat. Why didn't they create something new instead of reworking some one else's stuff.
I sort of knew the film was going to have problems when Spielberg changed the way the aliens first appeared. The whole scene about watching the end of the cylinder unscrew in the smoking pit was one of the most suspensefull parts, but instead they chose to just blow stuff up. What really disturbed me greatly was the fact that the audience laughed throughout the film as if it were a comedy. The scene that got the biggest laugh was
after Ray had protected her from seeing most of the horrible stuff in the begining of the movie, Dakota's character sees the dead bodys floating down the river and realizes what a terrible thing is really happening.
This scene wasn't funny, it was meant to be very disturbing and everyone thought it was just hysterical. If viewers are laughing at a serious film, something is definately wrong.
There were a lot of details left out of the script about the aliens that were important to understanding the story, the aliens and why we were invaded and they were nicely explaned in the original film, but here we only got a gloss over partial script that had no real firm story line to speak of. When the movie let out, most of the people coming out were looking at each other like they weren't sure what they just saw. It certainly wasn't War of the Worlds. At least not the one we were promised by Spielberg in the trailers. This movie was insulting to H.G. Wells classic story and a complete affront the the original classic film. This was plainly just one lousy movie.

Mikey-Ryan said: This movie was fantastic until the end heres why.
The kid found his way to boston(which is the only city left perfect cuz boston has a lot of bacteria i guess) nevermind the fact he survived but he friggin found his way to boston. how!?! did the dead soldiers lead him there!?!? is he fire proof!?!? is he michael myers!!? If i see one more fanning reaction shot in my lifetime please someone end my life right now! the action scenes were so gr8 that you could look past stupid things happening but that friggin ending man was pure garbage. the whole movie i have all these questions that i know will be answered right? wrong! the blood ok they use it make roots of somekind....why!?!?!?! tell me morgan freeman! tell me!! so tom cruise shoves gernades up this ship's ass finds time and space to put the pins in his mouth ok i'll let that slide cuz its a movie but damn its dumb. guys batman begins is a comic book movie and more realism was in that then this. these super smart beings from outer space who've planned this for millions of years had their ships underground forever. created lasers that will destroy everything didnt take the time to take a breathe of air!?!?! "geez these we're perfect killing machine aliens yet we dont have the technology to run an atomosphere test. what omg i cant breathe!! bacteria what!?!?! whats bacteria?!?! i'm alien i create weapons of death but please dont ask me how the weather is!" this garbage ending was just throw together. and it ruined a nice film i mean this film with any other ending is a classic sci-fi film. but come on guys. please dont defend such a stupid ending. this is a movie that draws so much power from mystery and fear of what we dont know and to just explain it by putting a string of fancy useless words together instead of saying bacteria. out of fear that people may say bacteria wtf!? this damn ending is so damn stupid. i want my dvd with an alternate ending and i want it now.
well obviously you don't read books, because it's been that way for a hundred years.
the martians put the ships there millions of years right? well a million years ago, humans didn't exist, neither did the bacteria that killed them, use your brain next time before you criticise something you don't know anything about.
my review of war of the worlds,
***1/2/****
Special effects are top notch, everything is top of the line in the movie.
*spoilers within*
the movie starts off with the narrator
(morgan freeman)
basically saying what was said in the first teaser trailer for the movie.
it starts off ray's (tom cruise) ex wife drops their kids off robbie and rachel. this is the only time you see her until the end so she's only in it for a couple of minutes, so you never get the chance to care about her.
it picks up fast, and never lets you go. it starts off
w/ the buried tripods in the ground coming out and frying everybody and blowing everything up with the heat rays.
you will get genuinely scared during this movie, and you see the destruction through tom cruise's character and his kids. never once do you see a news clip or the film going to some scene showing the rest of the world. you just know the rest of the world is getting destroyed. it stays on ray and his kids the entire time.
when you see what makes up the red plant like stuff you see in the trailers and on the posters, you will be like OMG. especially when they show how it's made. *creepy stuff*
as with the info that
robbie is shown being vaporized isn't true, you don't see him anything, they just cut away so you assume that he was.
while they're on the hill, you can hear the fighting going on over the hill but they never show it, it's good that they don't because you can imagine something worse than anything they can show you. and that's what you do is imagine the worst. back to robbie.
that's how he can appear at the end in boston. and with her saying boston didn't receive any damage, there's a clear shot of downtown boston, and it's basically gone. just the part where ray's ex-wife lives is relatively destruction free.
and the ending is abrupt, all of the sudden they show
a tripod all wobbly and and then ray points out and tells them to look at birds on the tripod, then the national guard in the area unleashes fire on the tripod (i guess since the martians were infected w/ the cold, they put the shields down on their tripods). and they bring it down, then it does to a wide shot of some part of boston w/ tripods falling, and then ray and robbie and rachel reuniting w/ their mom.
then
morgan freeman
(the narrator) comes and says that humans
couldn't stop them that we unleashed everything and didn't do anything, but the minute the martian breathed our air and ate and drank , the simple bacteria that our body kills everyday brings them down.
the end.
it's really good, some parts are suspenceful and some are genuinely terrifying. i didn't give everything, because this movie needs to be watched. it feels like a typical blockbuster in some parts, but you come to care about what happens to ray and rachel (not really robbie, because he's gone for the 2nd half of the movie). and you see the destruction through their eyes and what happens to the billion other people.
again 3 and a half stars out of 4. go see it, you won't be disappointed.
