Liam Neeson was supposed to step into the robes of a younger Father Merrin but, after he opted to concentrate on Love Actually, the role went to Stellan Skarsgard, who, like the original priest, Max von Sydow, is a Swede. Skarsgard plays Merrin as a missionary who does an exorcism in post-World War II Africa.
