Exorcist: The Beginning takes place about fourty years before the events of the original Exorcist. Mr. Merrin has abandoned priesthood and goes into archeology works in Africa. When he is hand chosen by a collector of rare items to investigate a buried Byzantine chruch, he not only finds what he's looking for, he finds something much much worse. After the Wars in the Heavens ended, Lucifer was thrown to Earth . . . he landed beneath the church. Mr. Merrin is up for the most life turning event of his life as he begins a battle between his priesthood, the survival of the villages beyond the church, a possesed kid, his disturbing past, and Lucifer himself.

I found this movie not be much of a nightmare-giver than the original Exorcist had on audiences thirty years ago but that's good. There were a few scares here and there but what I found most disturbing was the scene when a kid was torn apart by hyenas and the war between the British Army and the African Villagers. Personally though I found the Beginning to be a film not made of evil but a film with evil in it while one person stands above all else to fight it.

I give this film:

***+ out of ****
