David Twohy, writer and director of the movie, told SCI FI Wire that there will be a director's cut of The Chronicles of Riddick that will be around 15 minutes longer than the theatrical release. One thing that he reluctantly cut was a key scene featuring actress Kristin Lehman as a Shirah. In the scene, Shirah appears Riddick (Vin Diesel) with information about his mysterious past and his role in a battle raging in the universe. "There was a concern that, ... between the Judi Dench character, [Aereon,] who was a little mystical herself, and the Shirah character, played by Kristin, that there was just a little too much mysticism going on, and that it didn't allow the audience to get grounded as much as we needed them to be to go forth and enjoy the movie," Twohy said told SF Wire. "I'd be interested in putting [it] back in the film [in a director's cut on DVD.] Twohy also told SF Wire that the film was envisioned as the first of three movies but it's still not a sure thing if or when they will get made. "They didn't sign me to do three," Twohy said. "What we [he and Diesel] have said is that we have thought about the characters and plotted the characters for three Chronicles So we know in our heads where we are going."
