A bit of a Spoiler I think, so beware:
The book unfortunately only alludes that Riddicks intention is to bring Kyra back to life, in the very line that you have chosen, and though you are left with a little better understanding than the film leaves you with, it is none the less all you are left with. I feel that Riddick bringing Kyra back to life seems the most logical conclusion we can come to since the film looks, upon comparison with the book, to have been trimmed so drastically that many of the plot points were never really mentioned. I believe that even though David Twohy was given considerable creative license that he definitely ran head-long into the studios opinion of what makes a film great, therefore causing him to trim the film not only for violent content to attain a more kid-friendly rating, but also to conform to a shorter running time to better suite the studios opinion. And dare I say maybe even a bit of incomprehension on the studios part as to the scope of Twohys concept and story. All this, I believe has led to what we see now in theaters as the final cut of The Chronicles of Riddick. An extremely impressive action set piece with an intriguing, imaginative story, but for many, especially those very skeptic critics, a very cryptic and somewhat derivative work that parallels too many other science fiction authors and filmmakers that have come before. Now this is not my opinion of the film because I have read the novel (which I believe was written from a first draft script) and grasp the entirety of Twohys concept, and truly appreciate his hybrid influences, understanding that this is a wholly new and masterful piece of science fiction storytelling, with a gritty, arrogant anti-hero, unwillingly thrust into the heroic role he so detests, and being forced to come to terms with his humanity, at least on some level. This is the story that I spent a day reading, nearly non-stop, and that has occupied much of my time over the last few weeks in anticipation of seeing fully realized theatrically. And my verdict even with all of its flaws and key scenes missing? STUNNING!!
I would like to converse more with you about this, but dont have AOL instant messenger. I do have SBC Yahoo DSL and Ill try to contact you later today. Thanks for your interest in my thoughts, and I am looking forward to hearing what you thought of the film!
