I don't know, but I think Martins ok actor
but not only would I Never Cast him as the inspector, but why did this film NEED to be remade. It was a classic and I find this remake to be dissrespectfull to Peter Seller's performace and it must be known that he was the ONLY Inspector. I don't think his performance can be topped.

What's the next remake??? Dr. Strangelove???

I hear what you're saying. I don't think Sellers would care...he might have even been flattered.

Can Steve Martin measure up to Sellers? No, but I think that's because he'll be quite a different Inspector Clouseau.

Sellers practically lived his roles, Martin acts them.

I agree, there's some sacred ground that doesn't need to be dug up, although I can't say that a comedy like this is one of them. It just runs a high risk of failure, like all remakes, since it sets an impossibly high standard.

example: If you go to this movie, you're going to laugh your head off

See what I mean?

I don't think Martin was the right choice. While I don't mind so much that they are making more movies in the Pink Panther saga, I think it would be better off in the hands of someone other than the overly flamboyant Martin. He just can play the role straight enough. I'll spend the whole time waiting for him to start shouting "Stay away from these cans!! He's Shooting at the cans!!"

My gut tells me that Mark Wohlberg would have been a better choice... just based off his role in I Heart Huckabees... or maybe the guy from Rushmore... He's stoic enough to pull it off straight. ... Where I to be charged with casting it, I would've gone on a hunt for an unknown. *shrug* maybe that's just me.

I'm glad other people share my view, Pink Panther should have been left alone and now matter how good Steve Martin is he will never live up to his idle, Peter Sellers, he should just buy the box set and enjoy that. Ewan.

Its not like its a BAD character, its a FUNNY one...so why not bring it back.
The filmakers only intention is to make people laugh, not to disrespect Peter Sellers.

Its a character just like a James Bond, Batman, or whoever, that should continue on through time simply because we enjoy the character.

It's just an impossible standard to live up to. I can't speak for a film actor like Martin, but from a stage perspective, I know a little about what its like to be constantly compared to someone else's performance.

The average audience will simply make the comparison, and not think about the work that the actor did to try to be a different Inspector Clouseau.

Another weakness is that Steve Martin has also become a cliche of himself, as someone noted above.
