September 29, 2003 — USA Today sinks its teeth into the production of The Cat in the Hat with a behind-the-scenes look at the movie (and an interview with star Mike Myer).
Think Home Alone, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, add a dollop of chaos, and you get an idea what The Cat in the Hat will look like when it pounces into theaters Nov. 21.
"The story is an elementary lesson in chaos theory," director Bo Welch says. "The Cat is the perfect balance of chaos and order."
Welch, an Oscar-nominated production designer (Men in Black, The Birdcage, A Little Princess) making his directorial debut, faced the challenge of bringing Dr. Seuss' beloved children's book to film.
"You have to create a design that presents enough familiar imagery and behaviors that you could believe really exist, but also address the design of the book," Welch says. "If you made it like a suburban neighborhood, and you had a 6-foot-tall cat walking around, it would be off-putting, if not creepy."
Welch opted for a fairly realistic world that turns into a Day-Glo fantasy world when the dapper Cat, who is played by Mike Myers, arrives.
