| My thoughts on this movie... |

Sigmund Freud was once quoted as saying, "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is just that - there's really not much more going on beneath the surface.
Don't get me wrong - I absolutely loved the movie, and I've seen it 5 times. It blew the first one out of the water and then looted it for parts and shiny objects. But what it lacked, and what the first movie lacked as well, was a deep connection with the main characters.
One of the many things that made the books so great was that you felt that you actually knew Harry, Ron, and Hermione on more than a superficial level. You were at their side throughout the Hogwarts school year and almost felt a part of their little group. This, an integral part of the books' spirit, is lacking in the first two Potter movies.
That said, pretty much everything else about the movie was wonderful. Gilderoy Lockhart (always my favorite book character) was brought to life perfectly by Kenneth Branagh - you couldn't ask for a more hilarious portrayal. Jason Isaacs was marvellously creepy as Lucius Malfoy; he managed to push the limit without going unbearably over the top. The movie itself had far better pacing, was darker, and flowed nicely.
Some nitpicks:
- If you're going to use doubles for scenes, (ie. the hallway cupcake scene) make sure they have similar hairstyles to the kids they're doubling. Nothing's more of an eyesore than a kid with blonde hair parted down the middle trying to be a double for Rupert Grint.
-
Voldemort can only disintegrate/tear apart so many times. There are far better ways to dispatch him and make it look a little less cheesy.
- We get the point after about the fifth time we see the kids screaming, please don't inflict it on us any more!
Overall, I highly enjoyed the movie. It was darker, yet incredibly hilarious. I don't think it's quite capturing the spirit of J.K. Rowling's novels yet, but it's certainly getting there. Here's one CD editor eagerly awaiting its release on DVD! |
