What seems like a couple of years ago (can't remember how long it was), a book called Artemis Fowl, the first part of a series, was being heralded as a huge rival to Harry Potter. What happened to it? Until recently, all four Harry Potter books (published 1997-2000) were on the top ten sales list, as well as Lord of the Rings (published 1954-55)... but Artemis Fowl was nowhere in sight. What happened to it? Has anyone read it? Is it any good? Is it as good as HP? Anyone? Just shows you how badly wrong the press can get it sometimes ...

Well, I suppose you must have read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings - but if you haven't, you must. As for my favourite books - try Crichton's Jurassic Park, it's pretty good. And if you've got a strong stomach, the Hannibal Lecter books (Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal) by Thomas Harris are excellent. Also look for Messiah by Boris Starling. It's a bit like the film Se7en, but set in London, with a great twist in it - but don't worry, the twist isn't just a copy of Se7en's. It's a brilliant book, but again, is pretty gory in places.

While I would agree that a lot of his stories (especially the recent ones) are more character studies than horror stories, he's had some books that were REALLY scary.

I love thinking back to the summer I read "IT". We had a cabin in the Adirondack mountains, and one night I started reading when everybody was going to bed. I didn't notice that my light was the only one on until I started trying to go to bed. I was afraid to get up and walk across the dark room.

So I just kept reading until someone came out of their room and turned the light on for me. I LOVE that book!

I really liked The Bourne Identity (Can't wait to see if the movie is any good), but couldn't get into any more Robert Ludlum books. Same thing with Robert A Heinlein; loved Stranger in a Strange Land, but couldn't get into the rest.

For a long time, I was really into the Fletch series by Gregory McDonald. They're just fun, quick reads, but they were very entertaining for me.

Artemis Fowl is a wonderful series, it really is. And to say it rivals HP is really a matter of opinion. If you like the darker, more sarcastic side, Artemis Fowl is perfect. If you enjoy the value of "friends" and "good over evil" then stick to Harry Potter. Artemis is too raw for you. The lines between good and evil are blurred and sometimes you find yourself actually cheering on the bad side, just to see what they will do.

As I said, it's all about opinion.

Artemis Fowl is brilliant! The main difference I see between it and Harry Potter is that Harry Potter is so long, it has more in it. There are alot more side-plots in HP. Artemis is pure genius and always related to the main story. Artemis as a character is brilliant! The evil kid genius, whos starting to developing a kinder side? Its perfect.

Overall, I couldnt choose a favourite. Artemis is so good its scary!
