August 30, 2001 — Here's a little teaser from the interview:
Ryan Rotten: How is it that a cool monster movie is made by a guy who doesn’t like horror? The other day you mentioned you’re not a big fan of the genre…
Victor Salva: I’ve been a horror fan since I was a kid. But, the horror fans that I know of today are the Mario Bava, Freddy Krueger, Friday the 13th kind of ax-in-the-head kind of group. So I guess that kind of pushed me away from it. Those movies are really not my cup of tea and I’m not part of that generation, you know? My brother and I watched Creature Features every Saturday night but it was always the old Universals. They had just started to show ‘Night of the Living Dead’ - which was such a scary movie for me even right up to my senior year of high school that I could not make it all the way through that one. My girlfriend and I, in my senior year, tried to watch it one night and we could not make it all the way through. It was so scary, but it was also really graphic. That stuff is so over-poweringly repugnant that I don’t enjoy it. So, I think all I was trying to saying is - ‘cause I was surrounded by a bunch of horror guys who I know like the gore stuff - I’m not sure I’m that person. But, I love horror. I mean, my God, I’ve got an entire rack [points to an extensive DVD collection – one rack is filled with horror titles] plus a million other titles are all horror. I love that genre and when it’s done right I’m just the biggest fan.
