Anticipation Level:
How excited (or not) I am to see this movie...
A lot of people have called this a remake of Manhunter. Personally, I prefer not to think of it like that. This is an adaptation of Thomas Harris' Red Dragon, and unlike Manhunter, we hear it's pretty faithful to the book. Manhunter was a real mess of a movie. The imagery was over the top, the music cheesy, the ending Hollywood-ised, William Petersen was poor, and contrary to many views, Brian Cox was NOT as good as Anthony Hopkins. People say they found Cox more chilling because he underplayed the role - my view is that he was not scary at all, because he simply DIDN'T play the role.
But this is not Manhunter, this is Red Dragon. With a top-notch cast (Anthony Hopkins, Edward Norton, Ralph Fiennes, Harvey Keitel and Emily Watson), the return of Lecter's cell, Oscar-winner Ted Tally writing the script, and a fantastic trailer, this has the potential to be even better than Silence of the Lambs. My one concern is about Brett (Rush Hour) Ratner as director. Then again, Jonathan Demme had only done films like Married to the Mob before he did Silence, so maybe producer Dino di Laurentiis is hoping for something similar here. I'd still have preferred David Fincher, though ...
