Anticipation Level:
How excited (or not) I am to see this movie...
After Hannibal i couldn't believe that the greedy film-makers remade the better 'Manhunter' into this unscary pile of poo with an old Anthony Hopkins PRETENDING that he's young by putting on a wig. The trailers look very pantomine and the '15' certificate is worrying.
Movie Review:
My thoughts on this movie...
Everybody slated 'Hannibal' saying it made a mockery of the character and claimed that 'Red Dragon' took him back to his roots. How wrong they were. First of all, 'Hannibal' was a very good little thriller with alot on its shoulders having to follow the rather good 'Silence of the Lambs', showcasing Lecters most entertaining qualities, and Hopkins portrayal of a blood thirsty animal walking about in a posh human suit made it one to remember. However, from the opening scenes of 'Red Dragon' where we see Anthony Hopkins in an unconvincing pony-tail wig combined with his undeniably wrinkly face, we the audience can't help but snigger. this is supposed to be BEFORE The Silence of the Lambs? It's off to a bad start. Edward Norten essentailly takes the Clarice Staring role in this, all thats missing is the dress. Here he reprises his depressed 'Fight Club' character and makes us all wish that Lecter had killed him in the first 5 minutes. Ralph Fiennes turns us as the killer of the title and is about as scary as tunafish casserol. Oh, and Harvey Keitel is up for the "Best Wasted Actor Ever In A Movie" award, and Emily Thompson provides the "pointless character" that has become such a landmark in modern movie-making. Only in the last 5 minutes of the film does it perk up, revealing some real tension which only makes it all the more tragic as the rest of the film is boring and too unoriginal (certain scenes from 'Silence' being restaged almost shot for shot lack the initial bite they had years ago).
DVD Review:
Thoughts on the DVD release of this movie...
MAYBE worth it if you really want to complete your Anthony Hopkins Lecter trilogy.
