Yep- it WAS mentioned in the film. Can't quite remember if its in the book, mind. I think it is. The thing about Chilton's rejection from the archives was definitly in the book, though.
As for the hiding place, the toilet roll would be the safest place to put it. Just about everywhere else would be checked. The thing I'm not sure about is why Lecter was given steel cutlery in the prison dinner scene (not in the book- not sure how it came about, either). Now, bow down and kiss my feet.
