Warning, potential spoilers ahead, look away if you haven't seen the movie....

Something is bothering me. I was trying to rack my brain on this after watching the movie. Its about the note Francis sent to Hannibal. How did Francis get this note to him? I can't remember if they mentioned it in the book, but in the movie they didn't.

Did he sent it by mail? But wouldn't they scan Lecter's mail and catch it...??

Did he sent the whole toilet paper and hope it gets put in Lecter's cell? Those are pretty risky odds...

I don't get it? How did that note reach Lecter??

And why didn't Lecter save the letter, in a safer place, rather than putting it back in the toilet roll.?

Any thoughts?

I think in the movie they mention that it was mailed to him (but I could be wrong). It is at the point in the movie they are running test on the letter and Graham/Norton asks why they let him have unopened mail..and they say something about Privacy issues...

This makes sense b/c later in the movie Lechter mentions to Chilton he received a piece of his (Chilton's) mail and had opened it by accident (the letter was declining his recent submission)..which means he regularly gets mail and it is not opened and vented before hand..

Yep- it WAS mentioned in the film. Can't quite remember if its in the book, mind. I think it is. The thing about Chilton's rejection from the archives was definitly in the book, though.

As for the hiding place, the toilet roll would be the safest place to put it. Just about everywhere else would be checked. The thing I'm not sure about is why Lecter was given steel cutlery in the prison dinner scene (not in the book- not sure how it came about, either).
