I just got back from it....I was exceptionally pleased...not amazed, but I still loved it. I found it to be better than Manhunter in some ways, and I found Manhunter to be better than it in some ways. First of all, the female leads just kick major ass. Mary Louise Parker and Emily Watson are incredible. And Ralph Fiennes was very fun to watch. Emily and Ralph did the best parts in the movie. Edward Norton got boring at points, and I was craving for Will Petersen. I'm open minded about Harvey Keitel as Crawford - Harvey looks and acts pretty much a lot like what a regular FBI agent would be. I was disappointed with Phillip Seymour Hoffman's performance, though. I was expecting way more - he seemed just like his role from Almost Famous. Stephen Lang did a better job. The scene where Freddy is kidnapped was really cool, though. Ralph Fiennes and Tom Noonan both did great jobs as The Tooth Fairy and Emily Watson and Joan Allen both did incredible jobs as Reba. Hannibal in this movie got boring. I wanted more of Francis and Reba. Hannibal became more funny than menacing. The music is damn fine, but I liked Manhunter's score better, and Dante Spinotti's cinematography for Manhunter was better. They're both great films. I wonder how big of a record Dragon might make in box office boffo...hope it doesn't flop. It was barely packed in my theater.

Just watched Dragon myself and there was hardly anybody in there. i had to go check outside the door and make sure that i was in the right theater door....and so did the next 3 groups that came after me. I thought it was a good movie, however not as good as silence and hannibal. (Didnt mention manhunter because I am still not sure how I feel about that one). I was actually disappointed in the sense that they could have done so much more with dolorhyde's character. I wasn't scared at all when I left the movie, however, I can watch Lambs everynight of the week, and still "bill" scares the crap out of me. I will have to go back and watch it, to see if maybe I will enjoy it more the second time around. That is how Hannibal was for me. I also feel that Ed Norton didnt seem to have the fear towards lecter that I assumed he would have. Considering the scenario between them years ago had scarred him so emotionally...making him leave the FBI.....it appeared that he was having this immediate-calm-talking to your mother kind of ease about him. The acting was great, but I just feel the film could have been so much darker.

Can anyone tell me how the ending links in with SotL? It does, according to a review I read, and very cleverly at that. Remember, you're not spoiling anything, since I've read the book, but it's not released in the UK until next Friday. Please tell me!

Just saw it myself.... great movie!! I liked it, and I thought they adapted the book very well. I was disappointed at some parts and they left or changed alot of things from the book. Not to say they did a bad job or anything... it was still very good.

I would have liked if they did more with Francis and his Grandmother, they barely touched on that, if they did more the ending with Francis and Graham would have been more exciting.... and why didn't they use the voice for the Red Dragon?? it would'va been cool to hear the Red Dragon tormenting Francis....like in the book....

Overall, Hopkins did an amazing job, Norton was ok, not too convincing, Fiennes was awesome! And the rest of the cast was good. Oscar worthy? maybe not.... although Anthony Hopkins could get nominated.

I have to go now and watch SOTL.... just for the fun of it!!!

Actually, I just read the CD review, and it said something about Chilton mentioning how attracitve Clarice is? Am I along the right lines?

Ok DarthMark, here ya go:
Yes, Chilton metions to Lecter that an agent from the FBI is there to see him. He says that she is very attractive; but he has told her that Lecter probably won't talk to her. As he walks away, Lecter says, "What's her name?" It's pretty dang cool!
Thanks a lot! ... but hang on a minute ...
If Chilton has told Clarice that Lecter probably won't speak to her, then Chilton has already met her ... but in SotL, Chilton goes down WITH Clarice, but stops at Barney's door, and never goes in ... unless Chilton told CRAWFORD that Lecter probably won't speak to Clarice ... but then how does he know she is attractive? Does he have a picture of her, or a file? Or does he tell Lecter by telephone, somehow?

I agree that it doesn't make any sense. There's really no need for that scene, but I guess that they had to put it in to tie everything together. I didn't like it at first, but I do the more I thik about it -- if you can get past the stuff that doesn't fit.
It sucks that you have to wait another week to see the entire movie.

Just saw the movie it was not quite what I expected. I guess that I did not like it as much as the other 2 because Lector was not the villan of the movie even though he was not the villan in SOTL either. I wish that Will was written better but he was good as Will in terms of how the rest of the movie was written. I heard that Anthony Hopkins would not do another Hannible movie, is it because of the poor first weekend turnout or is he just tired of the role?

Okay so I saw the film this past Saturday...And while I didn't think it was excellent I liked it much better then Hannibel. Hannibel was a visual feast, but I felt Red Dragon was much more in line with the style of SOTL. Also not having seen Manhunter I can't provide my thoughts on a comparsion.

I read the book a long while ago I don't remember all of the details, but thought they did a great job bringing the story to screen. I usually really like Ed Norton, but agree with others that he just doesn't shine in this role. My impression was that Graham was grittier -Norton was simply to "clean" looking.

Fiennes was fantastic and was the highlight of the movie for me..do agree though that he didn't invoke the fear I felt with Wild Bill in SOTL..

Overall good movie, but I was hoping for the tension and buildup of SOTL and Red Dragon just didn't have it.

I think the film critic from Dallas put it best when he said:
"It's impossible to duplicate the shock of the 11-year-old Lambs, but the new film succeeds at creating nerve-tightening moments of suspense."

I thought Dragon was great, but who could ever forget the first shock of seeing Hannibal on the screen? You just can't duplicate those moments. They're moments of film history!

Personally, I can't think of a better way to end Red Dragon. Whilst the book's ending was brilliant in it's own right, it wouldn't really work on screen. So, ya gotta add something in. Nicely done, mind.

Also, did anyone else notice the deleted scene in the 2nd trailer where Dolarhyde turns up at the Graham residence, saying "Hi... I'm a friend of your fathers'." I'm glad it didn't show up, by Dolarhyde's sudden return was SOOOOOOO much better in the book. But hey- that's cinema we're talkin' about.

Otherwise, it was a great film (despite my many minor criticisms).

The way it ended with Hannibal. The Dolaryhde ending was a bit- dare I say it- annoyingly different. In the book, it's like Dolarhyde suddenly emerges and stabs Graham, whereas here, Graham's on to him before he sees him. It just takes away the surprise, really.

Well, I've finally seen it, and I was very impressed! Far better than Manhunter and Hannibal, and nearly as good as SotL. Ralph Fiennes and Emily Watson were especially good, and Norton was better than people are giving him credit for - he just doesn't play-up the role as much as Petersen did.
And I loved the ending! It sort of makes sense - maybe Chilton met Clarice outside, showed her to his office, went for a word with Lecter, and then went back upto his office to meet Clarice ... Oh well, it was good, anyway!
AND BARNEY WAS BACK!
