Anticipation Level:
How excited (or not) I am to see this movie...
Okay Die-hard Starsky and Hutch fans, here it is in a nutshell. This isnt your mothers Bay City. Accept the fact that youre in an alternate Starsky and Hutch universe and youll find that Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson have created a funny and occasionally touching story of how Starsky met Hutch. Some of the personality traits are right on the money (for example, Starsky desperately searching for some sugar for his cup of coffee.) Others are a little hard to swallow (Hutch a dirty cop? Say it aint so!) But in the end, if you can get past all of the inaccuracies (and I know that will be a big hurdle for some) youll find that Wilson and Stiller have gotten absolutely right the only detail that ever really mattered. And Im not talking about the candy-apple red Torino.
The movie gets off to a somewhat slow start and in the first few scenes you wonder how theyre ever going to be able to fill the shoes of the original Starsky and Hutch (Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul.) And then all at once you see that first tentative connection; that first spark of what Starsky and Hutch fans know as me and thee. Are Stiller and Wilson as good as Glaser and Soul? No. No one could be. Paul and David created those roles and the characters will always belong first and foremost to them. But by the time the originals show up, Im willing to accept the reluctant passing of the baton. (Great imagery by the way kudos to whoever came up with the passing on of the Torino.) Id still love to see Glaser and Soul have the chance to wrap it all up for us in a movie of their own but Id also be open to a Stiller and Wilson sequel. And no one in the now dual Starsky and Hutch universe is more surprised by that than me.
