March 2, 2004 — About.com has conducted an interview with director Todd Phillips (Road Trip, Old School). Here's a clip:
How hard was it to get the original Starsky and Hutch actors for their cameo? At first I thought was going to be some resistance because [David Soul] was a little bit bitter or however you want to put it about certain things, but he seemed into it once we approached him. It didnt seem to be an issue. And he likes the movie and hes supporting the movie. Hes done publicity in London and hes gonna come to the premiere, I think. It wasnt difficult .
Was it nerve-racking to direct the originals? No, I wouldnt say it was nerve-racking. Its fun. You know, it was four years of their life, it wasnt their whole lives. And I think they have the right attitude about it.
Did you have to tone down Huggy Bears pimp-ness for modern audiences? Well, you never saw him do a lot of pimping in the original series either. In the original series, I mean, Ive watching probably 65 of the 88 episodes, and Huggy never pimped anybody. Hes just a guy who somehow, he was running his thing. But you never knew what he did. So we kinda kept it like that on purpose, in a way. He actually owned a bar in the original, which is what we had him doing in this. But you knew he had some side businesses that werent exactly on the up-and-up.
