March 1, 2004 — Snoop Dogg, who plays "Huggy Bear" in the upcoming Starsky and Hutch (directed by Todd Phillips and starring Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller) film, spoke to the Chicago Sun-Times about beating out Puff Daddy or P. Diddy (whatever it is now) for the role:
Phillips insists Snoop was his first choice for Huggy because he's simply "the coolest man on the planet." That meant that he had to give another music man the heave-ho -- and that wasn't easy, because P. Diddy campaigned for the role.
"Man, P. Diddy couldn't have been Huggy Bear," Snoop says. "I think Huggy has a certain Dogg quality inside of him. You know what I'm saying?
"It means that a man is cool, but he also has a lovable side of him. He sees all sides of the world, too. In that way, he's not restricted to one particular audience. Anyone can converse with him."
"Starsky & Hutch" was a favorite series for Snoop in the '70s.
"I'd race home from school to watch 'Starsky & Hutch' and 'Good Times,'" says the man who grew up in the lower-income areas of Long Beach, Calif.
