February 15, 2003 — Director David Dobkin spoke to the Daily Trojan about directing a sequel, and where he wanted to take the story:
Dobkin knew exactly what he wanted "Shanghai Knights" to be. He disliked sequels that just rehashed the same jokes as their originals and only changed the setting of the movie. Instead, Dobkin wanted "Shanghai Knights" to be more focused on the characters.
"One of the most enjoyable aspects of creating this sequel was already knowing the voices of the characters, which allowed us more opportunity to explore humor in their relationship," Dobkin said. "The comedy stems from conflicts between Wang and Roy's different cultures and personalities, which we heightened by putting Wang's sister into the mix."
