Yu's intent in framing the title around the seal was to establish the rich atmosphere of the film's setting in the splendid yet tumultuous world of 19th century China and to set the stage for the great adventure that is about to unfold. "The Imperial seal is an object of mythic proportions, awe inspiring, and a key element in the plot of the movie, yet it is unfamiliar to American audiences," explained Yu. "Through this title sequence, we are introducing the audience to the seal and to all the magic that it suggests."
