February 6, 2003 — "Really buddy-buddy" is how the loquacious Chan characterizes the partnership with Wilson both on screen and off. The two men are seated next to each other in a Century City hotel. Wilson, his blond hair covered by a baseball cap, is low key. Chan is as vivacious as you'd expect the action star and outtakes champion to be.
"He helped me a lot, really," Chan says of Wilson, who is nearly 15 years his junior. "On the screen, behind the scenes, we're just like friends. So it's easier. We know what's going on."
The alchemists
In Hollywood, the formula for comic chemistry is about as sought after as a guaranteed diet pill. "Shanghai Knights" director David Dobkin has his own theories about why the Chan/Wilson pairing works as well as it does. According to Dobkin, the two stars' style of humor is similar and each has a healthy sense of self-mockery.
Basically, Dobkin says, Chan and Wilson are like the pair of fifth-graders horsing around in the back of class and dissolving into hysterics over the same things.
