After months of speculation and legal maneuverings, the sale of Mortal Kombat developer/publisher Midway Games is finally going through. Within the past day, the court overseeing the Chapter 11 bankruptcy of Midway noted that there were no other bidders for Midway's assets, so the only bidder for the company was Warner Bros.. In addition, all objections to the sale (including Threshold's question over IP rights and Vin Diesel's Tigon Entertainment questions about owed payments) were resolved, clearing the way for Warner Bros. to purchase the company. From the Chicago Tribune article:

Warner Bros. had submitted a $33 million bid to buy "substantially all" the assets of Chicago-based Midway. If there had been other bids, the court would have supervised an auction. But no other parties submitted competing bids, Midway stated in a Tuesday court filing.

...

The judge said Wednesday that the objections to the Warner Bros. deal were resolved, clearing the way for the approval.

Midway's creditors and Thomas agreed in early June to give Thomas a $5 million payment. He bought media magnate Sumner Redstone's 87 percent stake in the video-game manufacturer for $100,000 last year and also assumed $70 million in Midway debt originally owed to National Amusements, Redstone's movie theater chain.

Thomas' secured claim in the Midway bankruptcy was $30 million. He also had a $40 million unsecured claim that is eliminated as part of the settlement.

The only real word on the opinion of the MK developers regarding this development is something Ed Boon said on his Twitter to TRMK's Patrick McCarron: "looking forward to the focus being on the games, making them better and less on the noise surrounding us."

With this development in place, it seems Midway's financial future seems to be more secure. We'll report more as we learn it.

Hmm, I'll reserve my judgement until I see what MK for the PS3 looks like.

Hmmm ...

I don't really care who OWNS a property, just what they DO with it.

I haven't played a MK game since the PS compilation. I haven't actually been GOOD at one since MK3 for the SNES, although I'm extremely tempted to see what the MK vs. DC looks like.

Most MK fans thought it was a terrible idea of doing MK vs DC mainly because they weakened MK but since the game has sold almost 1 million copies on each platform i'd say their customers are fine with it so you can probably expect the sequel next year sometime.

Then I'll definitely have to check it out sometime, although I'm far more interested in playing MK vs. DC.

I've really got to know how they make a lot of these fights so that they aren't one-sided.

Which of course is cannon and has been one of his weaknesses for years now. So it's not like they just made it up, it was just a happy coincidence. I've liked all of the new Mks for the consoles to be honest. From Deadly Alliance up to MK Vs DC. Even Shaolin Monks was a pretty good Co-Op brawler.

Agreed and being able to play as EVERYONE in Armageddon was a welcome addition.

Yeah but for me the create a fighter was the coolest even if it was abit limited. But they screwd up big time with that create a Fatality thing.

I loved Shaolin Monks but i had no one to play it with.

To hell with Capcom vs. Marvel. I want them to make a DC VS. MARVEL game. The comics have always been awesome. I KNOW that a video game would rock.

(Btw, I don't actually think Capcom vs. Marvel sucked. I own and love that game.)

Yes that'd be awsome and so would a MK vs SF or a MK vs KI.

Hey what if it was a 3 way battle? Marvel vs DC vs Image or 4 way and add Top Cow to the list or Dark Horse.

I don't know, if you memorize the button sequences well, you can create some pretty cool stuff with Kreate-A-Fatality. Besides, what would have been the alternative? 63 different fatalities? I think being able to choose how you rip your opponent apart was a pretty good stress reliever.

I'm not sure how well a MK vs. Image would do.

Although the Image Universe certainly IS closer to MK than DC or Marvel, with the exception of Spawn, most of Image has gone away. I don't really think I've seen much coming out of Image comics since the '80s pop culture revitalization died out again about six years ago.

I just hope that MK gets back on track. DA and Deception were awesome and I loved the roster in Armageddon; but the gameplay and fatalities just felt watered down in Armageddon with the generic create a fatalities that caused characters to lose that individual touch, and the 1 fighting style which I missed being able to swap.

MKvsDC was an abomination. It should have been done as a comic series and left at that. Klose Kombat and the fall fighting were interesting the first few times but were too gimmicky and lost appeal fast as well as interrupting the flow of gameplay; and the characters.... while some of the DC characters fighting styles suited the game, the characters themselves (with the exception of Batman, and strangely enough Lex Luthor) did NOT belong anywhere near the MK roster. It was an interesting but failed experiment and I hope they leave it at that.

MK Shaolin Monks was actually a pretty decent brawler and was a refreshing change from the previous spin-off attempts (Mythologies or Special Forces anyone?) and I wouldn't mind seeing another game take a stab at this.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

If they do a mortal kombat movie they need to reboot it. Start with a clean slate and not worry about making it a "video game movie" and make it a "mythology" movie also don't try to put everything into the first movie. Make a good first movie to set up the mythology and add more as it fits the progression of the story and not force anything that doesn't just because it's part of mortal kombat.

It was that type of crap that resulted in the second one. I hope they take your advice and do it decently but unfortunately I'm not holding my breath.

Ohh man this does not sound good!

Warners has not revealed what plans they have in store for potential film development of the properties, though they did not purchase the company's two development studios which would indicate they've little interest in continuing on the company's game franchises.

s-midway-games-rights

Tough the movie thing is promising. We may not only finally get another MK movie but possibly movies of Midways othergames. Like The Suffering, now that make one great horror flick if done right.

But this could be the end for the MK and other games series.

opps sorry, Ed and crew are still working on the next game but whos knows what'll happen after that. But atleast he said there wont be any Superheros in the next game and the fatalities are supposed to be blodier than ever.
