I don't think they use versus to make them want to fight against each other. It's more like Batman and Superman versus The Joker and Lex Luthor. They just use it to make the title sound cooler. They could change it to "The World's Finest" so it be more appropriate since they are both friends.

They do fight each other, but not because of a disrepect or anything, its because of a disagreement on the way they pursue justice. Superman believes working within the law whole Batman goes above and beyond the law to apprehend criminals.

The precedent for this story was laid out in this comic:

Set in the future, Bruce is a tough old geezer and Kal - El is still Kal - El. The world is a mess and the two men come to blows over philosophical differences. Bruce uses kryptonite and future tech armor and weapons to fight him.
It's a pretty good read. The ending is a little weak but you can't have it all...

Batman and Superman never really hated each other. They have key ideological differences, which results in conflicting views on how to do their jobs. Over time though, they learned to respect one another, and recognized that while they had different ways of being a hero, it didn't make either one of them "wrong". The only times Batman and Superman ever actually fought was when Superman's mind was being controlled by some outside force.

As for the movie, the only real reason (IMO) they were going to/are going to call it Batman vs. Superman is for marketing reasons; I'm assuming that the WB suits think that the idea of two heroes fighting each other would draw in more of the "general public". And as Vanisher said, the precedent for these two to have some sort of big battle was set by The Dark Knight Returns.

They call 'em fingers, but I've never seen 'em fing.....................
