June 2, 2003 — According to the Boston Herald, Lemony Snicket may be headed to Massachusetts:
The SARS scare is bad news for Toronto - but good news for Massachusetts, which is starting to attract more interest from Hollywood as studios and stars shy away from threat of the virus.
``We've just started receiving some calls because there's some talent, directors and producers who are reticent to go to Toronto because of SARS,'' said Mass. Film Bureau director Robin Dawson.
Toronto has become one of the world's leading movie capitals because of the relatively cheap production costs in the Canadian city. But the health crisis, which has decimated that city's tourist industry, could also cost Toronto film projects.
And Canada's loss, it seems, could be Boston's gain.
DreamWorks production peeps are loving Charlestown as a possible location for the Jim Carrey flick ``Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events,'' Dawson said.
Sadly, Philadelphia and Portland, Maine, are also in the running.
``It's a big competition,'' Dawson said. ``And it's all budget-driven.''
