As always, be considerate of others who have not seen the movie, and use SPOILER tags, or don't mention specific critical twists and plot points at all.

Thanks,

It was an excellent film. Jim Carrey was genius, as usual. The film could, of course, not contain everything from the books. But I thought that it transeferred from one book to another very gracefully. Some things were added to the movie that weren't in the books, but they were added with care and fit in well. The music was great and Emily Browning was superb. Go see it!!!

I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I thought that some of the acting was a little bit too much over the top. I mean, the acting was all solid; it just seemed like the actors were catering to children (and reasonably so).

There were some changes in story, but a good bit of it was just shuffling from book to book.
Like how the end of "The Bad Beginning" was actually the end to the entire movie, sort of.
Anyway, if they have in their minds how they're going to reorganize everything, they definitely should make a sequel because as a stand alone film, it leaves a lot of questions unanswered: questions that they didn't have to ask if they didn't have the idea of sequels.

Well, having never read the books, I really didn't know what to expect from this movie. After LOVING his subtle performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I wasn't really into the idea of seeing the same old crazy Jim Carrey again. Plus, it was getting some mixed reviews (it had 61% positive reviews at RottenTomatoes...which isn't bad, but it's not that good, either). So I went into it with pretty indifferent expectations. Not low, not high. I just have to say that I was extremely pleasantly surprised with this film. Sometimes Carrey went overboard, but most of the time he was great as Count Olaf. But I'm happy to say that the really great thing about the movie was not Jim Carrey's villain, but the chemistry and performances of the 3 protagonists. There's not a moment that I didn't believe that these were 3 siblings who loved each other, and the stand-out perfomance was definitely Emily Browning who was so convincing as the eldest sibling who was forced into the matriarch position after their parents' death.

There were some really perfect elements to this film, such as Browning's performance and cinematography. There were also some not-so-great things. The movie feels like a stand-alone film, and NOT part of a long series. This would normally be a good thing, but they bring up some storylines that are left incomplete because I'm assuming they are dealt with in future installments. However, as I said, the movie seems like it's one solitary story, so this makes it feel a little unresolved at the end. Also, the structure of the children moving from guardian to guardian started to get old by the end. I doubt this is the movie's fault as that is probably the way the books are, but it still got a little repetitive. But in my opinion, the good in this film far out-weighed the bad, and I saw a movie that was funny, wierd, touching, and entertaining. Overall, when I left the theater I felt very charmed by this film...similar to the way I felt leaving the theater after Big Fish.

I enjoyed it, and although there were some changes from the books, I din't mind that so much.

I loved Jim carrey, and I thought all the other adult stars Glenn Close, etc. were also good. The kids kinda stole the show, though.

I thought they were better than the ones playing int he Potter films. (gasp)

It wasn't a great film, but it was very enjoyable. However, I don't know how they think this is a kids film, maybe kids in the sense of 10 and 11, but I saw some young kids there. I thought it was pretty gruesome for the little tikes

I didn't care for the film that much. I haven't read the books, but I've glanced at some of the pages from the first book. By the way Glenn Close wasnt in the movie. The only thing I really liked was the cinematography. I didn't like how they didn't have it take place in England and have british actors. But for some reason they tried to give the film a British feel with the style of cars, costumes, etc. eventhough we realize they're not in England or any part of Europe. I am American, but I dont support a british book being americanized with american actors for the main parts, and t hrowing in contemporary dialogue here and there during the film, like Timothy Spall saying to the children, you can reach me by phone or fax, the baby calling COunt Olaf a schmuck, and that black guy in the movie, forget his name, when he ses Count Olaf on the boat with the children and is like, "Hey Count Olaf, what you doin here, man?" In my opinion, the whole cast should have been british, taken place in England and not had any references to contemporary things to make the movie feel timeless. They did to this movie what originally they wanted to do with Harry Potter movies, and have them take place in America in contemporary times and have an American star play Harry Potter. So that disappointed me.

I heard some of the same things from friends. The contemporary references were rather irritating, and unecessary.

I haven't seen it yet, but I liked the books a lot.

^^^ mm, yes, I really didn't care for Cedric the Entertainer in this film - not that I ever care for his performances....

No, but overall, I really loved the movie. I have read the series a couple times through, and I think they did a wonderful job, what with adapting the first three books into one movie. Like someone said above, I also loved how they
made the ending of the Bad Beginning the end of the movie
What I love about movies based on books, is seeing how they can make the movie origional without leaving the plot, and whoever wrote the screenplay and script for this did a really excellent, origional job. It was done VERY creatively, in my opinion.

And yes, they really did put in a LOT that we don't learn until MUCH later in the series, what with
VFD- about what the parents did, about the schism!
But I suppose that's okay - they should DEFINITELY make a sequel.

I also really liked the scenery they created. It's all so surreal and magical and the costumes were REALLY tasteful...

Of course, I'm gonna say I loved the performances - Mr. Carrey really surprised me, I thought he would b too...uh, what's the word, "comedic?" to play a villain, but it was done very well, mind you they did make Count Olaf a bit more "funnier", what with the
obsession about being an actor, and all, and all the facial...uh, "movements?"
Merly Streep annoyed me a bit - I swear, I'm hearing that voice in my nightmares.
I really liked the kid who played Klaus (Liam something?) , and Ms. Browing did wonderful is portraying one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. And, I really like Sunny, even though some of her dialouge was a bit ... "mature"
ex. : "Is she desperate?" - about Aunt Josephine
but it did make me laugh.

Right. sorry that's so long. In summary - I loved the movie, and can't wait to buy it on video...

Ok. I was so excited to see this movie, months of excitment had been building up! So I finally got to see it on monday night, and ...I...was so mad!

I was so upset! I am only on book 6 now, and yet here they were giving you clues in the movie that you should NOT know just by reading the 2nd or 3rd books...heck half the things they mentioned weren't even in books 4 or 5 either! I would not have made half the connections I did yet, because some things have not been revealed in the book I am on! But now that I know, I don't even really want to keep reading! I know that sounds vauge but I can't spoil the books for people who havn't read them yet.

It was a funny movie, Jim Carey and the kids did an excellent job! Its not their fault that they gave away everything else. Even the complete zig-zag they did through all 3 books didn't bother me....

Instead of saying "books 1-3", they should have said "books 1-3, and oh by the way we give away lots of stuff that hasn't even happened yet in book 6 yet."

Very frustrated, I would not see a sequel for fear of them ruining even more for me.

mm...sorry it was like that for u...yes, they did give away a lot, though..

but u have to understand - they didn't kno if they'd create a sequel, right? So they had to put in enough to give it a plot that would satisfy even if there wasn't going to b another movie. They couldn't start something without virtually closing it in the end, really..

I finally got a chance to see the film. I must say, I liked it a lot. The kids in this film were excellent, acting-wise. The comic timing, and "absurd" humor was good, and unpredictable.

Jim Carrey was quite funny, probably the funniest thing I've seen him do in years.

Billy Connolly was also excellent, and added some balance to the film.

They captured a specific Gorey style of scenery and costumes very well.

The end credits were also quite interesting to watch.

Now this is a franchise that will do well for sequels, but it will be difficult, given the age range of the young actors.

I look forward to re-reading the books, and seeing what else they'll do.

I was reading peoples reviews on yahoo and they all complain about the same thing. " The movie was not like the books at all". People, no movie is going to be exactly like the books. You need to learn to watch the movie as a movie not as a movie being done by a book. Movies are for you to relax and enjoy things you would never see in real life.
Okay now to say what I think about this film. I thought it rocked. It had a great moral. Jim Carrey rocks as Count Olaf. The three chrilden did a great job. And I thought the film was better than the books.

You have to wonder how authors are writing their books these days...always with one eye towards having it made into a film.

Quite different from literature classics. It wouldn't surprise me if someone said the movie actually did a better job than the books, because it can visualize what the author had in his/her mind.

Unfortunately, that tends to kill our own creative thought, but that's a long discussion.
