Well, having never read the books, I really didn't know what to expect from this movie. After LOVING his subtle performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I wasn't really into the idea of seeing the same old crazy Jim Carrey again. Plus, it was getting some mixed reviews (it had 61% positive reviews at RottenTomatoes...which isn't bad, but it's not that good, either). So I went into it with pretty indifferent expectations. Not low, not high. I just have to say that I was extremely pleasantly surprised with this film. Sometimes Carrey went overboard, but most of the time he was great as Count Olaf. But I'm happy to say that the really great thing about the movie was not Jim Carrey's villain, but the chemistry and performances of the 3 protagonists. There's not a moment that I didn't believe that these were 3 siblings who loved each other, and the stand-out perfomance was definitely Emily Browning who was so convincing as the eldest sibling who was forced into the matriarch position after their parents' death.
There were some really perfect elements to this film, such as Browning's performance and cinematography. There were also some not-so-great things. The movie feels like a stand-alone film, and NOT part of a long series. This would normally be a good thing, but they bring up some storylines that are left incomplete because I'm assuming they are dealt with in future installments. However, as I said, the movie seems like it's one solitary story, so this makes it feel a little unresolved at the end. Also, the structure of the children moving from guardian to guardian started to get old by the end. I doubt this is the movie's fault as that is probably the way the books are, but it still got a little repetitive. But in my opinion, the good in this film far out-weighed the bad, and I saw a movie that was funny, wierd, touching, and entertaining. Overall, when I left the theater I felt very charmed by this film...similar to the way I felt leaving the theater after Big Fish. "I am bottled fizzy water, and you are shaking me up." -Incubus

| I didn't care for the film that much. I haven't read the books, but I've glanced at some of the pages from the first book. By the way Glenn Close wasnt in the movie. The only thing I really liked was the cinematography. I didn't like how they didn't have it take place in England and have british actors. But for some reason they tried to give the film a British feel with the style of cars, costumes, etc. eventhough we realize they're not in England or any part of Europe. I am American, but I dont support a british book being americanized with american actors for the main parts, and t hrowing in contemporary dialogue here and there during the film, like Timothy Spall saying to the children, you can reach me by phone or fax, the baby calling COunt Olaf a schmuck, and that black guy in the movie, forget his name, when he ses Count Olaf on the boat with the children and is like, "Hey Count Olaf, what you doin here, man?" In my opinion, the whole cast should have been british, taken place in England and not had any references to contemporary things to make the movie feel timeless. They did to this movie what originally they wanted to do with Harry Potter movies, and have them take place in America in contemporary times and have an American star play Harry Potter. So that disappointed me. "Everything that has a beginning, has an end."

I heard some of the same things from friends. The contemporary references were rather irritating, and unecessary.
I haven't seen it yet, but I liked the books a lot. "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." |

^^^ mm, yes, I really didn't care for Cedric the Entertainer in this film - not that I ever care for his performances....
No, but overall, I really loved the movie. I have read the series a couple times through, and I think they did a wonderful job, what with adapting the first three books into one movie. Like someone said above, I also loved how they
made the ending of the Bad Beginning the end of the movie
What I love about movies based on books, is seeing how they can make the movie origional without leaving the plot, and whoever wrote the screenplay and script for this did a really excellent, origional job. It was done VERY creatively, in my opinion.
And yes, they really did put in a LOT that we don't learn until MUCH later in the series, what with
VFD- about what the parents did, about the schism!
But I suppose that's okay - they should DEFINITELY make a sequel.
I also really liked the scenery they created. It's all so surreal and magical and the costumes were REALLY tasteful...
Of course, I'm gonna say I loved the performances - Mr. Carrey really surprised me, I thought he would b too...uh, what's the word, "comedic?" to play a villain, but it was done very well, mind you they did make Count Olaf a bit more "funnier", what with the
obsession about being an actor, and all, and all the facial...uh, "movements?"
Merly Streep annoyed me a bit - I swear, I'm hearing that voice in my nightmares.
I really liked the kid who played Klaus (Liam something?) , and Ms. Browing did wonderful is portraying one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. And, I really like Sunny, even though some of her dialouge was a bit ... "mature"
ex. : "Is she desperate?" - about Aunt Josephine
but it did make me laugh.
Right. sorry that's so long. In summary - I loved the movie, and can't wait to buy it on video...
The last time ... you fall on me for anything you like, your one last time, you fall on me ... for anything you like ...
And years make everything all right, you fall on me for anything you like, and I, no I don't mind ...

Ok. I was so excited to see this movie, months of excitment had been building up! So I finally got to see it on monday night, and ...I...was so mad!
I was so upset! I am only on book 6 now, and yet here they were giving you clues in the movie that you should NOT know just by reading the 2nd or 3rd books...heck half the things they mentioned weren't even in books 4 or 5 either! I would not have made half the connections I did yet, because some things have not been revealed in the book I am on! But now that I know, I don't even really want to keep reading! I know that sounds vauge but I can't spoil the books for people who havn't read them yet.
It was a funny movie, Jim Carey and the kids did an excellent job! Its not their fault that they gave away everything else. Even the complete zig-zag they did through all 3 books didn't bother me....
Instead of saying "books 1-3", they should have said "books 1-3, and oh by the way we give away lots of stuff that hasn't even happened yet in book 6 yet."
Very frustrated, I would not see a sequel for fear of them ruining even more for me. *****************
