I'll try my best to review this without spoiling it, but here it goes:
Basically, I loved this film with a few cons, give or take. For one thing, the film seemed a bit too rushed for me. I mean, Rocky VI was a tad like Halloween 6, by starting a subplot, following it with a few others in a sitcom style for a while, and then the subplot would just either solve itself quickly or end without closure. Another thing was that the film seemed a tad too mashed together, and I felt that it should've been longer than an hour and forty-something minutes, but I'm an epic kind of guy, as it were. Most all of the plot elements worked for this film, some of which you'd never expect to happen because the trailers are only 10% of the film. There's a lot of emotional content and a slew of references to past Rocky films, ESPECIALLY the first one. Rocky V doesn't get squat, thank God. Antonio Tarver works as the villain/opponent in the film, as he tends to reflect both elements of Clubber Lang's arrogant tone and Apollo Creed's intense will to prove something about himself. I enjoyed Mason Dixon a lot. The fight, you ask? Let's just say that this was the first time that I've stood and flat-out yelled in a theatre in a long time. The montage was good, but nothing too special. It wasn't like the originality of the Rocky IV montage, but it had more of a purpose of the 'blunt force trauma', similar to the Rocky II 'protect that eye' mission. I would feel bad if I even gave away what characters return in this film. Let's just say that the female lead in this one is a character that you would LEAST expect to see from again. As for acting, Stallone and Burt Young give brilliant performances, as well as the other cast members. The editing during the fight gave me a 'Revenge of the Sith-induced seizure' headache, as the flashbacks and color switches had my eyes on a stars and stripes acid trip. My last gripe was that Tony (Rock's trainer) was pretty under-used here, and wasn't given proper introduction, but above all, this was one of the best Rocky films in the series and it'll have you either crying or clenching your fists in a nervous sweat by the end. What a way to go out.
"It is... too late for me, son." |
